Solid Finnish Death/Groove,
This review is from: Deadly Fairytales (Audio CD)
Firstly, the outstanding production is one of the best attributes of the recording. Loud, heavy and with superb clarity, the songs are given a boost right from the get-go. Basically what GANDALF have done with their music is to infuse elements of SENTENCED with IN FLAMES, cutting back on the intricacy as it relates to technicality. The album's focal point is more along the lines of heaviness and that deathly groove that has become a mainstay with so many newer Metal acts. The band exude energetic and powerful vibes all throughout the album with heavy guitar-driven melodies and catchy rythms. They do cross the lines here and there to partake in some good old speedy Thrash numbers, proving they have the where-with-all to incorporate more than one style in their approach. Vocally, its more or less what is to be expected: raspy growls, though often there is distinct coherency in the lyrical content. This album may surely mark the start of something exciting if GANDALF keepchugging along the road they've elected to follow. SENTENCED fans should find this one particularly appealing though I can assure you this isn't quite as commercial as what SENTENCED have put out in the past couple of years. Deadly Fairytales scores high.
