Mojo's got an uncanny knack for winning at slots, but her home sweet home is Bad-Ass Bert's Biker Saloon. From Booklist

Mojo Sheepshanks wakes up to find her dead ex-husband next to her in bed in her apartment above Bert's Bad-Ass Biker Saloon, the latest strange moment in a curious life. Mojo grew up on the run with Lillian, her babysitter, after her parents were gunned down in their trailer. She has two so-called sisters, Greer, a former teen hooker who is now a prominent doctor's trophy wife who hires her to check up on her husband, and Jolie, an African American forensic scientist. And Mojo's undercover-cop boyfriend looks like a bad-boy biker. Miller is fabulous at capturing relationships on the page, not only the fire between Mojo and Tucker but also the caring between the three women who became sisters through Lillian's love. Readers will by entranced by Mojo, a quirky detective who sees dead people and is ready to hang out her shingle as a PI. The star of Miller's series debut possesses the appeal of both Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum and Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse rolled up in one. Diana Tixier Herald

More About the Author

In January of 2006, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Linda Lael Miller left the Arizona horse property she's called home for the past five years and listened to the call of her heart. Packing up her work-in-progress for HQN Books; her dogs, Sadie and Bernice, and her four horses, the author of more than 70 novels bid farewell to her home in the desert and returned to the place of her birth, Spokane, Washington.
The daughter of a town marshal, Linda grew up in Northport, WA, a community of 500 on the Columbia River, 120 miles north of Spokane. Her childhood remembrances include riding horses and playing cowgirl on her grandparents' nearby farm. Her grandparents' spread was so rustic that in the early days it lacked electricity and running water.

As delightful as this childhood was, Linda longed to see the world. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she left to pursue her dream. Because of the success of her author career, Linda was able to live part-time in London for several years, spend time in Italy and travel to such far-off destinations as Russia, Hong Kong and Israel. Now, Linda says, the wanderlust is (mostly) out of her blood, and she's come full circle, back to the people and the places she knows and loves.

Before Linda begins her writing day, she takes her first cup of coffee while enjoying the scenic view of the wooded draw behind her new home. The first morning there, a snowfall blanketed the pine trees, something she had missed in the desert outside Scottsdale. Still enamored with the people she came to love in Arizona, she says she will still set books in that starkly beautiful area, and, of course, in other stories the action will take place in Washington.

Devoted to helping others pursue their dreams, the author will launch her sixth round of Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women in May of this year. A talented speaker, she donates all her speaking honoraria to her scholarship fund. The stipends are awarded to women who seek to better their lot in life through education.

It's no wonder the protagonists in Miller's novels are women her readers admire for their honor, courage, trustworthiness, valor and determination to succeed, despite overwhelming odds. 'These qualities make them excellent role models for young women,' Miller explains. 'The male leads possess equally noble traits that today's woman would be delighted to find in her life's mate.'

The author traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she made her first sale.

Although Linda has written successfully in other genres, she is best known for stories set in the West'stories like McKETTRICK'S CHOICE (HQN Books March 2006 paperback); THE MAN FROM STONE CREEK (HQN, June 2006 hardcover) and that very first novel, FLETCHER'S WOMAN, which is being reissued in 2006. Her stories, set in yesterday's world, and today's, are historical romances, romantic thrillers, and other contemporary tales. They consistently score on prestigious national bestseller lists.

Linda has come a long way since leaving her sheltered life in Northport at age 18 to experience the world. 'Growing up in that time and place, in a family grounded in Western values, served me well,' she allows. 'And I'm happy to be back home.'

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I loved it!, October 24, 2006
This review is from: Deadly Gamble (Paperback)
I read this book and just could not put it down. At times I laughed at the antics of mojo and her ghostly vistors. Othertimes I cried. In between the ghostly visits is a compelling mystery story that keeps you guessing till the end. Many twists and turns keep the story going and kept me wanting to turn the pages.

Although there is kind of a love story woven into this mystery I felt that it was more a case of intense 'like'. I think there are more books planned so I hope the love story part will be developed over the next books.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars, November 3, 2006
This review is from: Deadly Gamble (Paperback)
Mojo Sheepshanks lives a fairly low-key life, at least presently, until the morning she wakes up with her ex-husband in bed with her. He's a ghost there to get things settled with her so he can leave the train station and make it to Heaven. He's even brought a present, the ghost of the cat her half-brother killed when she was four. Ghosts are the least pressing of her concerns, however. More than one person would like to turn her into a ghost, including the aforementioned brother who killed her parents years ago. Moreover, her ex-boyfriend is back in her life, but at least Tucker is alive. He may be a liar, but he is alive. Mojo may not stay that way if things continue on their present course, but if she can solve the mystery, she might have a better life than ever before.

**** Ms. Miller has been away from the paranormal genre too long, and it's a grand thing that she has returned. Mojo is a quirky heroine whose insights into life are off-beat enough to ring true. The plot moves rapidly from one incident to the next. Danger has never been so much fun. ****

5.0 out of 5 stars A zany paranormal romantic suspense, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Deadly Gamble (Paperback)
When Mary Joseph "Mojo" Mayhugh was five years old, she witnessed a brutal attack on her parents that left her orphaned. With Mojo's half brother, Geoff, convicted of the crimes, family neighbor Lillian kidnapped the child and raised her as her own. However, a couple of decades later, Lillian lives in Sunset Villa nursing home, where she seems to be wasting away, while Mojo resides above Bad-Ass Bert's Biker Saloon in Cave Creek, Arizona, not remembering anything before the abduction.

She is now twenty eight years old and her love life is either too hot or too cold and her employment record stinks. Now her late former husband Nick decides to haunt her and she is seeing ghosts; though some are still alive as her maternal Uncle Clive Larimer claims chance enabled him to find her after twenty three years and someone is stalking her. She is attracted to undercover cop Tucker Darroch, which irritates Nick. Finally, Lillian's stepdaughter Greer hires Mojo to learn if her husband is cheating. Mojo believes she has found her calling as she ponders what Nick and the other ghosts, her politician uncle, and convict Geoff want of her, what to do about her past as a Mayhugh and her future perhaps with Tucker, and finally what about that allegedly cheating spouse; all that while someone wants the truth to remain buried.

DEADLY GAMBLE is a fun zany contemporary tale that has elements from several sub-genres that mix delightfully well together into a wonderful cohesive novel. Mojo keeps the story line focused as she finds her past and present crashing on her head making her future not look too bright while the support cast enhances understanding of the pressures that converge on the beleaguered, bewildered and benign heroine. The story line is action-packed, filled with Lind Lael Miller's trademark amusing asides and barbs. Fans of paranormal romantic suspense will want to read Ms. Miller's marvelous madcap mayhem.
