Book Description

June 2, 2005
Divorced after twenty-three years of marriage, garden designer Liz Clarke returns to Greenwich, Connecticut, seeking the haven of her childhood. But her nostalgic memories are interrupted by a hysterical phone call - her pregnant goddaughter, Melissa, has discovered the bloody body of the chairwoman of the Backcountry Garden Club's annual tour. Liz must shift her focus from dirt to detection to save Melissa from suspicion.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Garden designer Liz Clarke returns to her childhood home in Greenwich, Connecticut, and finds that it no longer lives up to her memories. The chair of the annual garden tour, the city's premier social event, is dead in her garage, and Liz's goddaughter, Melissa, discovers the body. Melissa is six months pregnant, and the fact that the police consider her the prime suspect is not good for her health. As Liz and her boyfriend, reporter Sean Healey, work on clearing Melissa, the suspect list continues to grow. In Greenwich, it seems that social climbing is a combat sport, and extramarital affairs are the recreation of choice. Readers will want to create a flow chart to track the liaisons, and it might be wise to keep an herbal handy, too, for identifying the various flora on display. This entertaining romp through high society will be popular with both cozy fans and the Martha Stewart crowd. Barbara Bibel

4.0 out of 5 stars solid New England cozy, October 24, 2004
After twenty-three years of marriage to Jack, garden designer Liz Clarke divorced him as their plans for the future did not gel; she wanted to settle down spending quality time together while he wanted to see the world. Jack went off sailing while Liz opened up Liz Clarke Garden Designer in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Liz's goddaughter, pregnant Melissa Castle frantically calls her that she found a murdered Staci Hooper, chairwoman of this year's garden tours. Liz rushes to the scene only to learn that the stunned Melissa failed to call 911 or the police. Liz calls, but searches for the housekeeper who she finds frightened. When the evidence points towards Melissa, Liz, ignoring the police and the danger to herself, digs into a dirty scenario in which a host of people hate the odious obnoxious Staci.

THE DEADLY GARDEN TOUR is a fun amateur sleuth tale that starts a bit slow to introduce the heroine, but once she arrives at the crime scene, the tale and Liz go at top speed. The story line contains a fine support cast that either enhances the small-town environs or provides insight into the protagonist or prime suspect. Fans who enjoy a New England cozy will want to read this solid who-done-it.
