Horses All, May 2010--Toni Leland is known for writing fiery equine mysteries, and the tense, fast-paced Deadly Heritage is no exception...Leland delivers an exciting combination of horses and mystery with a touch of romance. Equestrians will appreciate her obvious horse knowledge and strong writing. Plan to tuck into Deadly Heritage during a long, uninterrupted night or on a trip. You won't want to put it down until all the questions are resolved. --Carol M. Upton, Horses All, May 2010

Why is heroine Kelly s Sutton s successful Quarter Horse breeding operation under siege? Who could be out to get her and force her off the historic Oklahoma ranch that has been in her family for generations? Readers will instantly sympathize with Kelley and aren t likely to put Deadly Heritage down until those questions are resolved. And the mystery isn t all the book has to offer. The author also expertly dangles before us the powerful pull of long lost love. Toni Leland has another blue ribbon book here. --Carolyn Banks, author of The Turtle's Voice

Toni Leland's latest novel delivers rip-roaring romantic suspense with scenes so vivid you can almost hear the hoofbeats as her characters negotiate a finely crafted web of depravity, deceit and family tragedy. --Robbie Huseth, Blue Ribbon Books

About the Author

Toni Leland has been writing for over 20 years. She has published five equestrian novels and two juvenile chapter books. Her short stories have appeared in Arabella Romance Magazine, True Story, and Horse Tales for the Soul. Toni writes a biweekly newspaper column on gardening as a spokesman for the Ohio State University Master Gardener program in Muskingum County, Ohio, produces articles for international gardening site, Dave s Garden, and writes feature articles for Grit magazine and Romance Writers of America s trade publication, Romance Writers Report. In her day job, she scripts and produces educational DVDs about caring for Miniature Horses, as well as writing and editing books about this unique height breed.

More About the Author

Horses, music, and big dreams shaped Toni Leland's pre-writing life, but those same things all found their way into her novels. The subconscious mind is a great thing.

A long period of time passed between Toni's childhood daydreams of galloping across an Oregon field of daisies astride a beautiful stallion, to the wonderful year when an aging retired show horse named Sonny made his way into her life. No matter that he was the ugliest horse alive, he was the dream come true. Those emotions of a horse-crazy little girl never go away, and Leland's story characters reflect that.

Music played a large role in Leland's early years. Classical piano study for ten years, church organist during junior high and high school, participation in the A Cappella choir, and accompanist for several smaller school choral groups paved the way for Toni's tenure as director of The Julie Singers in Holy Loch, Scotland in the early 1980s. Ten years later, she was a proud voice with The Kent Singers in Connecticut.

Big dreams? Leland's aspiration to become either a horse veterinarian or an archaeologist never came to fruition. Marriage and children set those dreams on hold, but in 1984 she had the opportunity to live in Cairo, Egypt and was ultimately able to see and experience the wonders of that ancient land. Of course, Egypt has many Arabian horses and Toni instantly resumed her horse-crazy activities.

Once the horse bug had revived, Leland decided that she would finally have that gorgeous stallion she'd dreamed about so long ago. In fact, she'd have as many horses as she wanted. On her return to the U.S., she began acquiring quality Arabian horses to breed and show. At some point, she became acquainted with Morgan horses, and had to have one of those too. Then a charming palomino Welsh pony mare named Jasmine. (There is no known cure for horse-crazy.)

Toni Leland started writing in earnest at about that same time, combining her graphic design talent with good copywriting, and working with horse owners and stables around the Northeast. Toni designed and produced several breed organization directories over the next few years, as well as a start-up magazine for the miniature horse breed. In 1988, Toni took over publication of the well-known Nutmeg Horse Bulletin, a yearly events calendar for Connecticut and surrounding areas.

Through those years and the ones that followed, Toni Leland has lovingly and carefully created stories involving horses and the people who adore them. Though she no longer owns horses, her insight into the animal, the human elements, and the issues that face the industry are all fodder for her novels. And to think it all started with an imaginary ride on a galloping stallion.

While feeding my love of mysteries, I also got to live in the world of horses that I love so much.

Just read Toni's latest novel. I guess I am a Leland Groupie. This is a fast paced mystery. It tackles family relationships and how difficult they can be. It strikes a chord. It does have a romance thread, but to me, the predominant component is mystery. The characters are real and well developed. Deadly Heritage is a great read and I would recommend it to any age group.

Toni Leland's Deadly Heritage combines elements of romance with a well told story of mystery and intrigue. It's a fast paced page-turner that characterizes the writer's in depth knowledge of horses.

The characters are real and believable, and the circumstances they find themselves in are typical of many American family situations today. Readers can relate very well with what is going on with the Sutton family.

The novel is set in present day Oklahoma, and the unique history of this region is tapped into very skillfully by the writer. The book is both informative and entertaining, and the writer's fast paced style keeps the reader glued to the pages until the very last sentence.

As a native Oklahoman and quarter horse owner I was impressed with the amount of detail. You could tell right away that she was a true horsewoman. The story line was good. The only thing disappointing was how blah the romantic relationship was. If they were so hot for each other you'd think they'd be all over each other instead of looks across the room. Not as good as Rescue Me!

Standing alone to try to hold off land developers, an all too real happening in today's time. On top of that, "crazies" in the family, we all know about that too! Highly recommended.

Another great book by Toni. Kellie had her hands full with her quarter horses along with dealing with the past with the sheriff.
