About the Author

K. E. Clark has an insatiable appetite for crime genre books and movies. In Deadly Instinct, his first foray into fiction, Clark has demonstrated the imagination the genre demands. His previous book, The Story Behind the Mortgage and Housing Meltdown, is an insightful and illuminating explanation of the historic and devastating 2008 financial crisis. A mortgage professional and executive for over thirty years, Clark is a keen observer of the trends that affect our world. Clark hosted the radio show Rebuild the Dream, which aired on the Washington D.C. area radio station WMAL. On the program, Clark translated and disseminated complex mortgage information for listeners, showing the way for people to achieve the American dream of home ownership.

An entrepreneur, policy advocate, radio host, and writer, Clark’s entry into fiction will prove to be his latest outgrowth of creativity and vision, as Deadly Instinct will keep readers enthralled and on the edge of their seats. Clark is a husband and a father. He is an avid cyclist, and spends his time with his family in Celebration, Florida and Park City, Utah.

Deadly Instinct opens with an unidentified man dying in the grass, and then flashes back one year earlier to introduce a slew of desperate characters.

Sarah and Jacob Glass want a child, but cannot conceive and--thanks to Jacob's criminal record--cannot adopt the usual way. Barbara Evans also wants a baby more than anything, but husband Billy longs to be rich and child-free. What are these folks to do?

Jacob and Sarah, dirt-poor, hire Ethan Boggs, an attorney known for doing things way off the beaten track. Boggs is super-motivated to find them a baby, being in hock to loan sharks, and Billy Evans, a seller of used computer equipment, is only too happy to deliver. Billy's a dreamer, and dreamers take big risks. Billy's ship launches once he learns how a simple mistake can cost a hospital eight handsome figures.Billy concocts a plan to make everyone happy and set for life.

Deadly Instinct is A Simple Plan meets Murder on the Orient Express with a lot of characters to follow--scattered all over the world--some more interesting than others, and no shortage of unscrupulous, unsavory men. Clark skillfully transports us across state borders, West Virginia to Maryland, where most of the action takes place. The plotting sometimes felt too mechanical, a common ailment afflicting crime novels and exacerbated here by the long laundry list of dramatis personae.

For the most part, Clark keeps the tension tight and story moving forward at a nice clip with a few jolts and stops along the way. If you like crime fiction, hop aboard, fasten your seat-belts, and enjoy the ride through the Mid-Atlantic states. Be forewarned, with all the greed and sleaze, you might feel like a hot shower afterwards.
