Book Description

"Chris Patchell's debut novel, DEADLY LIES, is a taut, fast-paced thriller that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go. Patchell is a master storyteller with a real talent for creating pulse-pounding suspense." ~ Kevin O'Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of TELL ME YOU'RE SORRY

Husband and wife stand on opposite sides of a divide created by lies and rooted in a dark and deadly past…

As a teenager, Jill Shannon fell victim to her stepfather's cruel abuse. Now as an adult, Jill's made it - she has a successful career and a solid, if not static, marriage to Detective Alex Shannon. Together they live out what seems to be a perfect life in Seattle.

The vow she made as a teenager to never again be a victim lies dormant - until one day a reporter lures her to his hotel room under the pretense of an interview - and suddenly all of it comes rushing back. Jill seeks revenge on the reporter, triggering a series of events that leads Jill down a wormhole of retribution, forcing her to spin an ever-widening web of lies.

Meanwhile, Alex is pulled into a case of a series of murders that began as cyber relationships. There seems to be a familiar fingerprint on these crimes, but Alex refuses to believe the murderer could be someone close to him.

2.0 out of 5 stars Started off great but . . . November 30, 2014
By M. T.
Format:Kindle Edition

Deadly Lies started off great but turned out to be a disappointment. Jill's behavior became more and more outlandish as the story continued and read more like a fantasy. What bothered me initially about Deadly Lies was that it seemed like two separate books, one about Jill and one about Alex. I thought their stories were interesting, in the beginning, but I kept waiting for them to merge. I definitely cared more about Alex and for the majority of the book I wanted him to leave Jill and find happiness with someone else. I just never warmed up to Jill BUT I did try to understand her. Learning about the abuse she suffered from her stepfather, while despicable, just wasn't enough to condone her actions. And men drugging women in order to take advantage of them is not acceptable behavior by any means but I thought there were so many other ways Jill could have chosen to deal with it. I didn't buy it and I grew tired of the drawn out, repetitive scenes of Jill luring in men to kill them. I absolutely hated the ending. The only thing that kept me reading til the end was wanting to see Jill suffer the consequences for her actions. She didn't, though. Alex paid the ultimate price and she basically got to drive off into the sunset.

Like always, these are merely my opinions and not all readers will share them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and constantly on the edge of my seat December 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Admittedly, I'm not a suspense novel but did find myself riveted by this book. The plot moved quickly making it easy to read and one of those books I just couldn't put down. The main character, Jill, is unique. I found her to be quite complex and it makes for an interesting discussion. I believe this was the first book by this author and I am certainly interested in getting the next one as soon as possible! If you like suspense, this is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will keep you up at night December 25, 2013

The pace is literally murderous. Especially taut thriller with many unexpected plot twists. And how Patchell brings the two major story lines together is ingenious and unexpected. Looking forward to the next Jill Shannon murder mystery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Page turning crime thriller December 26, 2013
By Molly R
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fast paced novel that I couldn't put down. I especially liked the parallel story lines of Jill and Alex - each pursuing justice for different crimes, their individual journeys driven by deeply personal reasons. The two stories intersect and finally intertwine for an unpredictable and satisfying ending that has my interest piqued for book 2 in the series. Terrific novel from a debut author.

5.0 out of 5 stars What are your secrets??? February 3, 2014

What can I say? I loved this book right from the Prologue! This book seemed like it was written by a pro that has been writing for years and years. This is a book that Patterson should read and take some hints and notes from because I loved it. :) I was amazed of the details and the thought that when into every chapter of this book. I will read this book again. It has been added to my FAVORITES list. Jill Shannon is not someone to mess with and neither is her husband Alex. Throughout this book, I was left guessing to what would happen next. There were only a few times where I could really tell what was going to happen next. I was amazed of the depth of the book. There was so much going on all the time that engulfed into the book. I wanted and want more. I want book 2! I was amazed on how I never got lost or confused while reading and remembering where Jill or Alex were in the story. Jill jumps around a lot in her travels for work, but I felt like I was right there along side of her watching her every move. Alex had his work cut out for him as well and then some! I'll leave it there....READ THIS BOOK! This needs to be read but anyone who loves a great thrill ride!
Happy Reading!

What an amazing thriller. Several story lines woven together to make one nail biter of a book. Alex and Jill seem to have it all, except it seems they are married more to their careers than they are to each other. Neither is afraid to take risks. Jackson Alex's partner is always ready to do what his partner has in mind. Meanwhile Jill is having an affair with her boss, that is until he throws her over for the "newer","older" model. Then there is the serial murderer... At the end there is a neat little bow with a few strings hanging. I really hope this is just the beginning of a nail biting series.

This story was really dark. I was very surprised at the ending. Maybe it's asking for a sequel. There is much more to learn about Lilith.

More About the Author

When Chris Patchell isn't hiking in the Cascade Mountains or hanging out with family and friends, she is working at her hi-tech job or writing gritty suspense novels. Writing has been a lifelong passion for Chris. She fell in love with storytelling in the third grade when her half-page creative writing assignment turned into a five-page story on vampires. Even back then Chris had a gift for writing intricate plots that were so good her father refused to believe she didn't steal them from comic books.

Years later, Chris spent long afternoons managing her own independent record store and writing romance novels. After closing the record store and going to college, Chris launched a successful career in hi-tech. She married, had kids but amid all the madness, the itch to write never really went away. So she started writing again. Not romance this time - suspense filled with drama, and angst, speckled with a little bit of blood.

Why suspense? Chris blames her obsession with the dark on two things: watching Stephen King movies as a kid and spending ridiculous amounts of time commuting in Seattle traffic. "My stories are based on scenarios I see every day, distorted through the fictional lens. And my stories come with the added bonus of not having to be restrained by socially acceptable behavior."
