From the Back Cover

A man of God . . . driven by the devil

To his parishioners, minister Matt Baker seemed a pious and good man. To his wife, Kari, he was a devoted husband and caring father. Always sunny and vivacious, Kari never questioned their frequent relocations from one small Texas Baptist church to another. Even when tragedy struck, Kari remained strong—until one day, inexplicably, she took her own life.

To friends and family, Kari's suicide made no sense—and they struggled with questions they couldn't answer. Why couldn't Matt hold a job with any one church? Why did he cut off all contact with Kari's devastated parents soon after her death? And who was the blond companion he began appearing with just days after the funeral? But it would take a team of investigators and dogged determination to bring Matt Baker's dark secrets to light—revealing a shocking history of lies, infidelity, cruelty, and sexual obsession that may have led a serial predator cloaked in God's word to commit murder.

Wow!! I just finished this book.I got it day before yesterday and have been unable to put it down!
Kathryn Casey does a wonderful job of getting all of the facts and backgrounds of the people portrayed in this book.
It's such a sad story ,but,an important book to read. It's so wrong that criminals like this one could get away with so much for so long just because people think " Oh, He's a preacher,of course he's a good person." I thought it was a book about a guy who murders his wife.I was wrong he committed a lot of crimes that KC tells about. He should have been stopped years before he got to the point of murder.(this murder)
I came away from the book thinking " what a punk" He is one of those guys that can never admit when they are wrong, instead they blame their victims and everyone else.
My prayers go out to Kari's family who were awesome in every way.Without them I think he would have killed again. And my prayers and hope to their daughters who went through so much.I hope they find peace and that Love does triumph evil!

As the title suggests I bought this book because of a personal interest. A relative knew the victim, and suggested the book. This is not the type of book I usually read. Fiction/mysteries from the free list is my usual fare. This book was worth the price! Casey presented the case in a factual, unbiased style that reflected personal research and careful study. She was descriptive of places and people in a way that brought them to life, without seeming biased. Being a fan of police/crime/lawyer TV shows and movies, I empathized with a family that thought the "professionals" would discover the truth and grieved when the whole thing was so badly mishandled. Being a believer and the wife of a minister, I appreciated how she discussed faith, church policies, and other Christian matters without criticism or sugar coating. I also appreciated her presentation of "the good, the bad, and the ugly" of all the people involved. The book was well written, and people whose faith was shaken by the actions of this "minister" should read this book to discover that evil can and does disguise itself as good but as Linda says "love trumps evil"!

I am an avid reader of true crime and for me, this book is top notch. It has everything I like....great backstory, great character development, interesting police investigation, and something that is important to me, the trial is not too lengthy. It is nicely condensed at the end of the book. Unlike some true crime stories which tell an abbreviated story about the people and crime, then fill 1/2 the book (or more!) with trial transcripts, Deadly Little Secrets is very well balanced and I found it very compelling. One of those books that you can't wait to pick up where you left off. I was sorry to see it end.

I savored the book as much as I could but it was difficult to put down the 3 times I did. I'm already reading it for the second time. What a great job KC did with a horrible subject! KC outdid herself on this one. From the first time I saw the story on tv I was hooked. There is so much info in the book, so many details she shares that most of us weren't aware of until now. It's a very sad read but so necessary to get in peep's hands as a warning about dirty little secrets - not just our own but those that belong to people we get into close relationships with. And to everyone who was so dedicated to bringing justice for Kari, you are heroes! I can't thank you enough for all you did to bring good from evil. Matt Baker was/is a person who thinks he can "baffle with bulls**t". I'm sure he did if from the pulpits he stood in and I know he did it to family and friends. He thought he could do it in front of tv cameras too. I thank God that along with so many who stayed at it in order to see Matt charged with/convicted of murder that Matt also helped put himself on the dark side of the bars, all the while attempting to baffle everyone with his BULLS**T! And that gf of his, so aptly named (bulls), as even her name gives her away as a baffler! There should have been charges brought against her too!

Another weekend spent totally absorbed in one of Kathryn Casey's true crime books, this one "Deadly Little Secrets." Within two or three pages, I was totally absorbed. The pacing is compelling, and relentless. While we know from the beginning who is going to die, we don't know how or why, and Casey expertly leads the reader into the flow of events. The killer is someone we know, his motive is a familiar one, and yet we are shaken by his cold-bloodedness. And just when we think the story is over, Casey takes us around another bend, and then another. Another remarkable work by one of my favorite writers.

Deadly Little Secrets, turned out to be a 2-day book because I could not put it down! Katherine revealed the events leading up to the crime and its sad aftermath in such a way that I feel as though I might know these people personally--especially Matt--what an evil man!
Highly reccommend!

More About the Author

Hello to Everyone:

I'm an immigrant to Texas from the upper Mid-west, but I moved here in the early eighties so I consider myself a naturalized Texan. Houston is an amazing place to live, exciting and full of life. I'd recommend it to anyone.

I ventured into true crime writing purely by accident. I was working at Houston City Magazine in the eighties when a fascinating murder took place in the Big Thicket, the wide expanse of pine forests that meld Texas and Louisiana. My editor suggested I cover the case. I did and, from that point on, I was hooked. I've never looked back.

Since then, I've written seven true crime books: "A Warrant to Kill," is on Houston's Kent McGowen case, that of a murderous deputy and the woman he terrorized. Next came "She Wanted It All," on Austin's incredible Celeste Beard case. It's hard to beat that one for twists and turns!

2007 introduced "Die My Love." It's an account of the Piper Rountree case, that of a Houston attorney and her professor ex-husband, Fred Jablin. The book is a fascinating, in-depth look at a train-wreck marriage that ended in a tragic murder.

June 2008 debuted "A Descent into Hell," on Austin's bizarre Colton Pitonyak case. Then, that November, "Evil Beside Her," a rerelease of "The Rapist's Wife," my first book, with a new title, cover, photos and an update. In 2010, "Shattered" hit bookstores, an account of the tragic case of Belinda Temple, a young mother murdered by her football star husband. And in 2012 the true crime book was "Deadly Little Secrets," on the sensational Matt Baker case out of Waco.

My foray into fiction began in 2009 with the birth of a mystery series featuring Texas Ranger Sarah Armstrong, a single mom, investigator and profiler. The series started with "Singularity," followed by "Blood Lines," and "The Killing Storm." All the books have garnered stellar reviews, and the third was named a best book of 2010 by Library Journal.

There's been little publicity for any of my work, so it's all word-of-mouth. Yet that's carried "A Warrant to Kill" into a ninth printing and "She Wanted It All" into a seventh. "The Killing Storm" was only out for a few months when it went into a third printing. Truly remarkable!

The credit goes to all of you who read the books and recommend them to friends and family. Keep up the good work! Spread the word! It's appreciated!
