Book Description

February 1, 2005
This is a crime Sukey Reynolds shouldn't be investigating . . . if she wants to stay alive
When Arthur Soames is found with a broken neck at the foot of the iron staircase in his back garden there seems little doubt that his death was accidental. But his estranged daughter Sabrina insists he was murdered, and when the police refuse to take her seriously she turns to Sukey Reynolds for help. Reluctant to become involved, Sukey says the police might listen if she found evidence to support her claim.
Shortly afterwards, Sabrina announces she is following a line of inquiry but gives no details. And then she disappears. At about the same time, a headless torso is found in a ditch. The police believe the victim to be a woman whose teenage daughter reported her missing after her stepfather left the country, but Sukey fears it may be Sabrina. She sets out to make some enquiries of her own, almost losing her life in the process.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Civilian Scene of Crime Officer Sukey Reynolds often cracks cases well before the local police--a fact she tries (unsuccessfully) not to lord over her secret lover, Detective Inspector Jim Castle. Her latest investigation begins when she is called to the scene of what appears to be an accidental death. Former teacher Arthur Soames has been found with a broken neck at the foot of a steep flight of stairs leading to his garden. The coroner declares it an accident, but both Arthur's fiancee, Elspeth, and his daughter, Sabrina, think it was murder. The police won't investigate further, so Sukey agrees to help Elspeth and Sabrina. When some very dark and bizarre facts about Arthur Soames' past come to light, the idea of murder suddenly doesn't seem so far-fetched. Rowlands' inventive plot offers up plenty of unexpected twists and a liberal dose of suspense. Her characters are vividly drawn, and the dialogue and pacing are skillful. Satisfying reading for fans of British police procedurals who prefer something less grim than Ian Rankin or John Harvey. Emily Melton
