Private Investigator Fran Kirk goes to France to attend a funeral and almost ends up in a grave herself.
Her reasons for taking the trip are shrouded in resentment and guilt. Resentment because her ex mother-in-law badgered her into going, and guilt because her major reason for agreeing to the trip was that it would be free.
Once there she gets a jolt when she looks into the eyes of her hostess, Annee Rien, her ex-husband's aunt, and finds there the deep blue of her ex's eyes and all the memories of falling in love. Before the dead man, Annee’s husband, is in the ground, they discover that he was poisoned and suspicion centers on Annee, who wastes no time in seeking help from Fran to prove her innocence.
