Book Description

Originally published by Hilliard & Harris under the title “Jury of One,” “Deadly Readings” is the first in Laura Bradford’s debut Jenkins & Burns mystery series.

The Jersey Shore has always been known for warm sand, lively boardwalks, and the promise of carefree summer days. This season the small scenic town of Ocean Point, New Jersey, is not nearly as carefree as tourists would hope. The discovery of the body of a young woman is the first in a string of seemingly random and senseless murders, murders connected only by a warning from the same boardwalk fortune-teller.

It’s a crisis that puts local detective Mitch Burns on edge, and his job in jeopardy. It’s up to him to solve the crimes and protect the livelihood of the town, a livelihood that relies almost entirely on tourists. With the help of newly hired local reporter Elise Jenkins, the two step out to discover who the killer is, before another body is found.

This was a exciting book! I really enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the story line. I couldn‘t put it down! As with all of Laura Bradfords mysteries, there was no way I could figure out “who did it“. I can‘t wait to start the next book in the series. This series is certainly a page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Resort Town Cozy Mystery October 31, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A new gal reporter and a detective in a resort town are both working on solving murders... not 1, not 2 ... 4 murders and almost 5. There are several good suspects.

A wonderful cozy murder mystery set in an oceanside resort town complete with piers and summer vacationers.

Short and a great read! Deadly Readings (Jenkins & Burns Mysteries)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read! October 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a neat book. Her characters had depth and the actions were believable. The Main character is a newspaper writer, with a police detective secondary character. The setting is a seaside resort town. I can see where many follow up books could be written with this same setting. Shades of Murder She Wrote, but very different characters. This one is a free book, it will get you hooked on her writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Seaside Murders January 9, 2015
By Eecie
Format:Kindle Edition
It's always a nice surprise to discover a series from an author you already like. I enjoy Laura Bradford's Amish series and came across this Elise Jenkins and Mitch Burns series. Deadly Readings is the first (I read it in paperback under the title Jury of One). I loved it so much I bought the rest of the series and am now reading the second in the series. Elise is a young reporter and Mitch is a police officer in a small beach town in New Jersey. One of the things I loved most about it is that the people at the newspaper are NICE. It is refreshing to have a boss who is a kind man and supportive and helpful rather than a snarling adversary. Ms. Bradford wrote this series before the Amish mysteries. It reads like a very experienced writer.

I think this one is the best of all 4 books. Had me guessing until the very end. I highly recommend - if you're going to read all 4 books - read them in order. They make better sense.
