This is is compelling, well written, hard to put down mystery that features spine tingling suspense and a geat romance. At the heart is a decades old murder that the main female character witnessed when she was very young and blocked out for years. Unbeknownst to her, this murder has affected everything in her life up to and including her difficult relationship with her family. The main male character is a detective who is drawn to the heroine and knows she know more about this cold case than she's telling. The story is well written and fully fleshed with some great misdirection just to keep things interesting. The characters in this book are people that are likeable to the reader, and I absolutely rooted for them to succesfully solve the murder and live happily ever after. Thoroughly recommended novel, all will enjoy.

Seventeen years ago Eden Moran saw something her little 9 year old mind couldn't handle. She attended a catholic school and struggled with the rules and the mean Nuns. The only good thing she had was Sister Beatrice who was always so kind to her. Then one fateful day Eden no longer remembered Sister Beatrice.

Eden is now a lawyer with the Albuquerque Public Defender's Office. After her unhappy childhood and never feeling like she was understood she likes defending the underdogs. When the human remains found at a construction site turn out to be those of Sister Beatrice, Eden is contacted by Kevin Dancer of the Albuquerque Police as being the one person who he had found out was the closest to her and might be able to shed some light on what happened to her. But Eden had no recollection of a Sister Beatrice and wants nothing to do with Kevin's investigation. But after experiencing a flash back to that time seventeen years ago she finally decides to help Kevin.

This takes the two of them on a fact finding mystery that uncovers so many threads which leads to more threads. The author did a fantastic job of leading us along. There was one time I remember yelling at the book it's "xxxx" thinking I had figured it out but I was wrong. There were some frustrating moments in the romance between Kevin and Eden where you just wanted to slap them over the head for being too stubborn but even though they were kind of mismatched they were perfect for each other.

Like a moth to a flame I was captivated from the beginning to the end of this book and I look forward to more from this author.

Donnell Ann Bell deftly intertwines a fast-paced thriller with an emotionally-charged love story. "Deadly Recall" will entice devotees of both genres, with added appeal for those who appreciate the southwestern setting of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The mystery begins when nine-year-old Eden Moran learns that her beloved mentor, Sister Beatrice, is leaving the school that very day. When released for recess, the devastated Eden dashes across the playground to St. Patrick's Church with hope of finding the nun even though it was against the rules to leave the school yard. She knew it was a sin to disobey but she had to take the chance. Unseen by Father Munroe and Sister Beatrice, Eden witnesses an argument between them that turns physical. The sister falls and the priest is unable to wake her. The shocked Eden sneaks back out and races back to the school's playground. Here, panicked adults await her. When they ask her where she's been, the little girl tells them she couldn't recall.

Seventeen years later: Eden--who had acted so outrageously all those years ago that she was expelled from school and sent by her parents to live with her aunt--has returned to Albuquerque. Now 26, she is an attractive and successful public defender. Unfortunately, relations with her parents are still strained.

It isn't long before Eden meets Albuquerque Police Detective Kevin Dancer. Attorney and cop can't help but be attracted to each other, but the detective's job is to put the bad guys in jail, while the public defender seeks to help the accused remain free. To add further complications, like Eden's, Kevin's family relations are troubled. Thus, both are wary of close relationships.

Review of Deadly Recall by Donnell Ann Bell
5 stars

I reviewed a complimentary e-book copy provided by the author and publisher via NetGalley, in return for my fair and impartial review.

"Deadly Recall" is a thriller as much as it is romantic suspense, with a cast of characters who keep turning the screws of tension (and turning up the interpersonal heat level) while the protagonist, Eden Moran, suffers from traumatic amnesia, a condition which revolves around only one set of memories--but which has affected her entire life from age nine. Once a good student, and a prodigal piano artiste, one event--and the fact that she witnessed it, inadvertently, resulted in failing grades, expulsion from the parochial school, a lifetime of manipulation and disbelief from her controlling mother. Now she is an accomplished public defender for the City of Albuquerque, managing a lonely but successful life--until bones are discovered in the desert, in the excavation for yet another new shopping center.

Over the past couple of decades, scandal and trauma in the Roman Catholic Church has been exposed often, specifically child abuse. Author Donnell Ann Bell takes a new perspective to the Church, offering a priest who first seduces nuns, then murders; then gets a promotion. The sensuality is steaming but tasteful, and the romantic tension and push-me/pull-you emotions between the detective and the public defender are delightful, sure to appeal to readers who love romantic suspense which has both the qualities of romance and of suspense.
