From the Author

When I started to write Deadly Trust (previously entitled Souvenirs), I was at the beach. Just sitting there, watching people, thinking about what their lives were like, helped me generate this story. Anna wanted a divorce, but when her husband was murdered, and she becomes the main suspect, she can't exactly tell anyone that. Her new neighbor, Brent, wants to help, but he has his own secrets, and being friends with the investigating officer makes her leery.

As I looked around the beach, seeing in the distance the sweep of the bridge to Prince Edward Island, I wonder if there was a man like Brent there, healing wounds that scar him. Or if there was a woman like Anna, desperate to prove her innocence while healing the wounds on the inside. They both have souvenirs of different tragedies. Souvenirs that could kill. And like my other books, they ask one important question. Can love be strong enough?

Enjoy my book!

Souvenirs is the first book I've read by author Barbara Phinney and it did not disappoint. The story is a romantic suspense and murder mystery all in one and had me glued to find out who the killer was. Anna, an abused wife, is the main suspect when her husband, Serge, is found dead but as the mystery unfolds, a list of suspects starts to form. Brent, an injured soldier, steps in and helps Anna try to prove her innocence as feelings develop between the two of them. I enjoyed watching them fall in love while trying to solve this mystery.

Two injured people are haunted by the past when they join together in a frantic search for the truth behind a grisly murder. Barbara Phinney draws her readers into the complicated lives of her characters and keeps them hooked until the mystery is resolved. This story is filled with danger, mystery, and romance. When an abused wife is suspected of murdering her husband, a gallant soldier comes to her rescue. Her knight's armor has been damaged but she hardly notices the scars he carries on his body, because his mental scars are more important. Anna needs to trust in her own strength. Brent needs to open his heart and love someone. Can these two wounded people erase the terrible souvenirs they carry from their past? Their future depends on it.

This is a fast-paced suspense/romance novel that keeps a reader interested from first page to last. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading a good story.

Barbara has given the characters in her book real-to-life issues and is true to them by writing a story of how love can heal wounds and build bridges of trust. Like any well-written suspense, Barbara Phinney has included interesting twists that keep the reader guessing until the end and I was not disappointed when her husband's killer was exposed.

(Deadly Trust) Souvenirs by Barbara Phinney
I am not one who enjoys murder/thrillers books so I put off reading this gift from a contest I won. Sorry I did not put everything aside to read this when I won it.
It's a super read for the detailed descriptions of locations, the storyline and the romance and the trust they give to each other.
Anna LaBonte is at a summer cabin and she knows one day that her husband is dead. She just has the intuition.
The cabin next door is Brent Stirling and he's on medical leave from his military unit in hopes of quiet and to get over the incident that left 3 others dead.
She gets a ride from him to the police station to report her husband missing.
Serge her husband has been a controlling freak, always was. even to the point he'd go to the hairdressers and tell them what he wanted. He picked out her clothes for her to wear every day and she had to be fully dressed and made up before breakfast.
She is relieved when the cops tell her that her husband was murdered in the motor home. Her car is still missing and she will notify her sisterinlaw in a few hours time.
She works in the forensic field and knows with Brent's help they need to find out who did kill her husband before the police, Luc arrested her.
Brent is snooping around to investigate the clues and things that happened prior to the murder to help her out.
As things progress and heat up between Brent and Anna he's been warned to stay away from her, if he wants a career in a few months time.
They tried to run them over on the road but they rolled to the ditch... Who would want to kill them?
They are each struggling with their pasts, trying to get over the nightmares and flashbacks.
Love the detailed explanations of why they investigated at certain places and who they talked to etc, to find out who really did the murder..
Excellent read!

This was a topnotch mystery with the wife of the murdered man the chief suspect. I loved the way she grew from accepting things to becoming the moving force to proclaiming her innocence. Good descriptions, tension and a resolution that was completely unexpected. I really enjoyed the book.

Barbara has crafted a suspense with plenty of plot twists and suspects. The main characters have their own issues but find love in the end. The scenery is expertly painted as only someone who knows the area well could do. I love that part of Canada and hope to visit there many more times.

What do you get when you mix action with lot of romance, a murder, suspense, and other little things? A great read that's bursting at the seam with intrigue.

That's what Barbara Phinney did with her latest novel, Souvenirs of a killer vacation.
When Anna's husband is found dead in a motor home, Anna becomes the prime suspect. Many things point to her being the killer. The police build a valid case against her with valid reasons. He'd verbally and emotionally abused her throughout their married life and she'd had enough. But would she go as far as killing him in order to get out of this marriage? Wouldn't a divorce be enough?
That's for me to know, and for you to find out.

What I liked most about the book is that Phinney keeps the reader guessing. Is Anna the murderer? Or, was it the young man with whom her husband had an altercation. He knew her husband had a lot of money and this young man was, well, in need of some. Or better yet could it be . . . who would want him dead and why? There are many possibilities. And Phinney had me guessing for a while.

In the process of trying to clear her name, Anna finds herself falling for former Special Operations Commander, Brent Stirling . . . and he for her. While Anna claims that she didn't kill her husband, Brent seems to be the only one who believes her. Or does he?
Get the book. I highly recommend it and you won't be disappointed.
