Book Description

Mapleton, Colorado's police chief, Gordon Hepler, would rather be on the streets than behind a desk dealing with budgets and the town council, but he promised his late mentor he'd accept the position. And to Gordon, a promise is a promise, even if the person you made it to isn't around anymore. However, doubts creep in, and he wonders if he was shoved into the job because his mentor thought he couldn't cut it on the streets.

Everything changes when a fatal traffic accident well outside Mapleton seems connected to elderly Rose and Sam Kretzer, two of Mapleton's most beloved citizens. The arrival of Megan, the Kretzer's grown ward, and Justin, their grandson add to his troubles when Megan is mugged. In addition, Justin is renovating his grandparents' house despite their objections, and then someone breaks in and the house is ransacked. When Gordon ties the car accident to a grisly murder in Mapleton—the first anyone in town can remember—he's afraid he's into more than he bargained for.

His fears are realized when his investigation seems to link the Kretzers to a Nazi war criminal. Can he work with the big-city detective brought in to assist? Will he be able to solve the crime without revealing the secrets of his citizens?

DEADLY SECRETS revolves around a secret journal kept by a Nazi during WWII, and the lengths people will go to protect those they love. Set in a small Colorado community, Deadly Secrets deals with people trying to do what they think is right while protecting those they love.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I started writing, I thought I'd write a mystery, which is my favorite genre. However, my daughters informed me that what I was writing was actually a romance. Since I'd never read a romance, I was surprised, to say the least.

I did start reading romance, and found romantic suspense to be a good fit, and had 7 novels published in that genre (#8 will be out in 2012). But that "can I write a mystery?" question nagged, and here, with DEADLY SECRETS, is my first "official" mystery book.

About the Author

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles and now makes her home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what she wanted, in books, television, and the movies. Once she began writing, she found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery she intended to write rapidly became a romance.

However, her entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a "mistake" when her son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the "good mother" she began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction, first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, she wrote her first short story.

Things snowballed and soon she was writing her first original novel. Much later, she mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to her son, and he said, "Oh, I've never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool." Little did he know what he'd started.

With a degree in Psychology from UCLA, she loves getting into the minds of her characters, turning them loose in tight spots and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent small town mystery May 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Trouble comes to the lovely Colorado town of Mapleton when ghosts of W.W. II haunt people who seem outwardly happy. First there's a suspicious car accident, then assault, then breaking and entering, followed by murder and kidnapping. There's a team of police chief and sheriff trying to solve the case, but so are two appealing young sleuths, Megan and Justin, who have their own reasons for trying to solve the mystery. Odell does a lovely job of catching the ambience of a small town, as well as creating believable, sympathetic characters and an exciting, compelling plot. She started in romance novels, but clearly has a strong future ahead of her writing mysteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars A darned good rainy afternoon read! December 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Terry Odell is known for her romance novels, however in this novel she combines romance and mystery.

The mystery revolves around an elderly German couple, Rose and Sam, grandparents of Justin and honorary "parents" of Megan. The latter comes to Mapleton, after many years away, in response to a "feeling" which her friend, Angie, has about Justin's intentions toward his grandparents. What is he up to?

The motive for two murders stretches back to World War 2, family matters and a surprising culprit. I don't believe in giving spoilers - it's not fair to prospective readers!

Terry Odell handled the plot differently to the usual one-on-one romance novel, having two couples in her sights. Her style is laid-back and easy, a novel to read on a rainy afternoon.

Odell focuses very much on the policing aspect of the mystery, thereby producing a story refreshingly free from endless pages of sexual encounters, which appears to be the norm in romance novels these days.

I suspect, and hope, there are more stories to come from Mapleton and that we discover what happens to these likeable couples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read January 8, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
I've recently started following Terry Odell books and I know she's known for her Romantic novels and since I'm more of a Thriller person I went along with this read and I must say I'm impressed. I like the setting of the story and how the plot unfolded she really brought the characters to life and there is a hint of romance in it but it wasn't overdone , cheesy or sappy . In the end I think it would be good starter book if you're getting into her collection and gearing more towards the "thriller" side for books.

Loved this book, it is extremely well written, with a fantastic plot and an awesome romance or three!!!

Megan, Justin, Oma, Opa, Angie and the Chief plus the supporting characters really bring this book alive. Not only a great mystery but great suspense and romance too.

I love Terry Odell and this is going to be my new favorite series of hers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deadly Secrets; Mapleton Mystery May 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is my first crime fiction read, and I loved it. Terry's work was offered to me as an introduction into the genre. After a multi-decade career in police work, I was skeptical about the believability of the characters involved in a work of fiction. Terry nailed it, and each cop I "met" in her book reminded me of someone I have known on the job.
Her characters were interesting and I was so engaged to learn what was going to happen next that I ran through IPad battery life until Deadly Secrets was completed. I cannot wait to start her next mystery. I very highly recommend Deadly Secrets (Mapleton Mystery).

4.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue and mystery January 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was an interesting departure for this author. I truly adore the romantic suspense books she has written, this book is more of a mystery/intrigue type of story. I thought the mystery was good and I must admit I didn't guess the bad guy until quite late in the game. The writing is smooth and flows well as is usual with this author-I like the characters, they all seem a bit insecure about themselves and I don't know that they were as well described as the author has done previously. I don't know if the lack of description is because there were 4 main characters instead of the usual h/h. This is a good solidly written mystery that most will enjoy and it does keep you guessing on several fronts, right until the end.

My published works include the Pine Hills Police Series, the Blackthorne, Inc. series as well as the Romantic Suspense novel, What's in a Name? and the Mapleton Mystery series. I've also published numerous short stories with The Wild Rose Press.

I'm an active member of Romance Writers of America, and its Kiss of Death chapter, as well as Mystery Writers of America. When I'm not writing, or watching wildlife from my window, I'm probably reading.
