When wealthy Victoria Decker-White asks PI Kate Kinsella to investigate the death of her husband, a well-known surgeon, Kate is reluctant to accept the case, since the police declared Decker-White's death accidental after a thorough investigation. But Victoria is sure her husband was murdered. Then Hubert Humberstone, Kate's longtime friend and sometime partner, declares he's getting married after meeting a blond American bombshell over the Internet. Kate is shocked and decides she needs time on her own. What better way to divert herself than to go undercover as a health-care worker at Fair Acres private hospital, where Decker-White worked, and see whether his wife's claim of murder is true? Soon Kate finds herself in the middle of a dark subculture of drinking, drugs, and illicit affairs, along with some very unhappy employees. Kate's spirited cheekiness and all-too-human weaknesses make her an appealing heroine, and Green's inventive, suspenseful story writing makes this a fine addition to the entertaining Kate Kinsella series.
