Book Description

Shadows whisper and the words are deadly . . .

A small, friendly Colorado town, nestled in the breathtaking Rockies, cloaks a malevolence, an evil that stalks women.

Jesslyn Black, a writer, is content living her now-single, childless life. If she keeps to herself, she can’t get hurt. Haunted by the past, Jesslyn never again wants to experience the soul-shredding pain of losing loved ones.

But a murder changes that.

Aiden Kinncaid is running from his own secret loss. As the CEO of Kinncaid Enterprises, he travels to this remote Colorado resort town to oversee the opening of the new Highland Hotel. Though he’s not interested in any kind of relationship, he finds himself drawn to this temperamental, brown-eyed beauty. And her rough-edged attitude is a challenge to him.

But whether or not either sought a relationship—they’ve found one. Aiden wants to protect Jesslyn even if she claims she can take care of herself, and she finds she can’t stop thinking about Aiden, even when he annoys her. Will they get their second chance at love and life before the killer eliminates one problem he doesn’t need?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great romantic suspense; Deadly-series 1 August 3, 2008
Format:Paperback
Jesslyn Black lost her husband and children in a car accident a few years ago. Since then she has led a secluded and unhappy life as an author in a smalltown. Then Aiden Kinncaid, the successful CEO of a hotel chain run by his family, rents a room at her house to oversee the opening of a new resort in town. He has his own problematic past to overcome. The two feel attracted, but since both are very strong-headed the sparks are flying in more than one way. And then a serial killer first kills Jesslyn's friend and targets her as a witness. Will Aiden be able to protect Jesslyn and will she find the courage to open herself to love and life again?
I was quite impressed with this book. The characters - including the killer - have depth, the plot is very good, there's humour and intelligence, and the whole reading experience was very enjoyable. It's a great debut and the other titles in the series (Deadly obsession, Deadly ties, Deadly games) are even better. So this is definitely worth buying. It's different from J. D. Robb, but I think you could enjoy this if you like her Eve Dallas-series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth continuing in the series August 17, 2013
By C. Gore
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book after reading the fourth book in the series. I enjoyed the fourth book so much, I was sure I would like this one too. And sure enough, it started with a bang... ok, more like a slash and a scream, but she had my attention from the very beginning. However, as she introduced the main characters my attention slowly waned.

Jesslyn came of as abrasive and bitchy, with moments of stupidity at the worst times. Aiden liked to puff his chest but seemed virtually importent in the face of Jesslyn's bitchiness. There was no chemistry between Jesslyn and Aiden. As a reader i was sympathetic to Jesslyn's history but she was also pretty abrasive, like stupid abrasive. Aiden for some reason found that attractive. So of course in a matter of like a week, their in love. I couldn't figure out how it happened so quickly, because basically they'd had one date.

I look back on this book and i'm not sure how I finished. At about the point <spoiler> that Jesslyn decides to go down to the lake despite the fact that she knows the serial killer is targeting her, alone, in the dark, in the middle of a thunderstorm, I was pretty done. I was hoping the guy would kill her, just so the story would be over. </spoiler> The book as a whole seemed move about the writer putting together dramatic scenarios, than about about scenarios that really made sense. The book seemed to drag on and on, not because it was overly long, but because the story construction was so poor.

So as much as I loved Deadly Games, I won't seek out any other books by this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring and trite August 16, 2013
By Renee B
Format:Kindle Edition
This book wanted to be a romance more than a suspense. It actually started out pretty good----sparks were flying off the hero & heroine, and the plot seemed to hold promise. But it was downhill from there. Once Jessie actually gave in to her feelings, she became unbearably annoying to me. She turned stupid and whiny whereas before, she was a tough smartass. The romance was just written in a way that seemed dated to me. I will say, for the first time in awhile, I guessed wrong on the murderer, but I still couldn't wait for the book to end. I'm sorry I've already purchased the other 4 books in the series. I may skip them anyway

I read about half the book, then gave up. The heroine character treated everyone rudely. Her back story included some harsh heartbreak, but for me that didn't justify her meanness towards everyone... And I do mean everyone. It got old listening to her belittle and brush-off nice people.
The story starts off with a rush of adrenaline, but then falls flat. The villain is too typical to take seriously. The timeline unfolds with a painful slowness. At this point, I don't care what happens to the rude heroine or any of the doormat friends she is wiping her feet upon.

Exceptional book in every way!! Ms. Clark has an absolute artistic way with her words, painting each picture with clarity and feeling. I am so thrilled to have found an author that has the ability to bring emotions out of me while reading! I cannot wait to start the next book in the Kinncaid series!!

I loved this first book in the Kincaid series. The villian was excellent. Evil, creepy, psychotic....it's got it all. It will keep you guessing until the end! The love story is great too. Everyone could fall in love with Aiden.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painful to read April 2, 2012

Did she not have an editor??
So boring! Terrible plot, ridiculous and unrealistic dialogue that the author obviously thought sounded clever but really came off as stilted and clumsy. I had zero interest in these characters from the 2nd chapter on. I had to force myself to read the second half of the book. Now I'm just pissed because I believed the other reviews and bought the whole series.
I'd return them if I could.

Don't bother with this book or this author. I certainly will avoid all her work in the future.
