Deadly Sins by Kori Miller

3 Stars

Dezeray Jackson is a private investigator working for Tracer International, this book covers a few of her different cases over a number of years.

I was a little put off by the writing style when I first started to read this book. It was choppy and jerky, it didn’t flow smoothly for me so it was difficult to read. The formatting was different the chapters were separate stories and were split up into scenes which put me in mind of a screen play rather than a novel. Then to make matters worse, none of the stories ended with a satisfying conclusion, not a cliffhanger as such, which I hate, but they just sort of ended, abruptly. I like my stories finished off for me with nothing left to the imagination…If I wanted to make my own stories up, and use my own brain why would I bother to read other peoples!

The author has a few traits that annoy me, for instance, dialogue tags before the speech and sound effects, these are unnatural for me. We don’t announce in real life that some one is about to speak so when I read a sentence like… ‘Without looking at me, she said. “Yes. Something from my private collection.”’ It stops me in my tracks and pulls me out of the story, for me it would have flowed better and not distracted me if it was turned around… ‘“Yes. Something from my private collection,” she said without looking at me.’ Dialogue tags shouldn’t be noticeable so when they are used in a manner different to the norm the readers attention is immediately drawn to them and that isn’t a good thing in my opinion.

As for the sound effects, during the second story there is mention of a whip, and while the conversation is going on the word ‘Smack!

This book is both awesome and a little strange.
Let's start with what I did not like - the format. The stories felt too short and perhaps needed a table of contents to tell the reader they are starting a new "episode."

And that is a good thing. I loved the character so much that I wanted to read more and more. There is something special about the "reality" of the character and the way she was brought to life that makes me feel as if I may just run into her at the pub or out on the street. She has that x-factor that makes a central character magnetic.

If Miller ever makes a full novel series out of this collection I'm sure it will be a great hit. Perhaps we might also see Dezeray kick some butt on TV as well.

Overall, it was a fresh read, fun and I hope Miller keeps coming up with more stories for the series.

Be prepared.
You’re going to be thrown right into the story of Private Investigator Dezeray Jackson. The action begins right away and doesn’t stop.
At the same time, Miller’s writing style is both personable and informative.
There is nothing sluggish about this book or Miller’s construction of the work.
Miller gives readers background information while blazing a trail ahead with the story of a character that you will both want to know more about and that you will, in some ways, identify with.
Not only that, but you will be in for some surprises along the way. If you haven’t read any of Kori Miller’s books, you should start here.
You will be in for a treat. Kori Miller is a master of suspense and I myself, as a huge mystery fan, look forward to reading more of her work, especially the account of Dezeray Jackson.

Initially I was annoyed with the abruptness of the stories, there are three. Miller walked readers up to the cliff and then left them teetering on the edge while moving on to the next story, I'm not good with cliff hangers. (I never watch the season finale until fall right before the next season's premier.)

However, as I'm thinking back over it I'm making parallels to life. Unknown/stupid motives for crime. Hearing the initial story in the news but never the follow up. We often hear the details up to arriving at the hospital and then nothing. Did the patient survive? Will they make a full recovery? Who knows, life just keeps moving and so does Dez Jackson. There's not much closure in life and a lot of uncertainty in crime and death.

I loved the final story! I see the lead for a later story and I like to speculate about where its going. That is actually part of the enjoyment and the challenge.

After getting past "lazy reader" syndrome and appreciating the authors ability to include the readers imagination in working for the conclusion I was sold. Can't wait for the next one!
