Editorial Reviews

It's the University of Texas campus in Austin, but it seems like a war zone. Gunfire resounds from everywhere. People fall. Others scramble to flee or help the wounded. Meanwhile, from atop the school's landmark Tower, Charles Whitman fires off round after lethal round. The Deadly Tower is the powerful story of the 1966 event that was at the time the largest one-person murder spree in U.S. history. Kurt Russell, far removed from the lighthearted roles that then made up much of his career, portrays the murderous protagonist. The film's heroes are others: police officers (including Richard Yn?iguez as Officer Ramiro Martinez), rescue personnel and various brave civilians. They faced the worst kind of terror - one who was real.

Pretty straight to the point on the story of Charles Whitman the infamous University of Austin Texas Tower Sniper. Could've been a little better but it was made in the 1970s. They said the real Charles Whitman only scored Marksman in the USMC but the dude was spot on in 97% of his shots during the actual events. Even managed to shoot 2 people dead when they peeped out from in between two columns that were a mere 7 inches or so from each other. One shot, one kill each time someone poked their head thru the columns. Those columns were also 500 feet from the base of the tower. I say he probably scored Expert his entire time in the Marines, but during his last qualifiaction he didnt care for the Expert rating because he was getting out. If one of the USMCs worst rifleman can do this, imagine what one with an Expert rating can do. The story tells of how Charles Whitman went crazy and killed his mother and wife at home. Then went to the University Tower and started shooting his fellow students. The experts who later examined his brain at Whitmans request said he had a brain tumor and was most likely what caused him to go insane out of nowhere.

I'm old enough to remember when this film was first televised . At eleven or twelve years of age at the time , I resided in California . Initially , yesterday afternoon , I thought it would be a bit of a lark to watch a youthful Kurt Russell portray such an individual . There's nothing carefree about this riveting recounting of the events of this 1966 massacre though . I felt as if I was alternately breathing rapidly and shallow as I observed the brave officers and citizen who took to the tower in question . Strongly recommended film making that may enthrall you as well .

This is the true story of the 1966 event at University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas, where Charles Whitman, a former Marine, goes crazy and holds up in a campus tower with a high-powered rifle for a shooting spree. The movie begins with Whitman preparing his killing spree by killing his wife and his mother (to spare them the pain of what he's about to do). Kurt Russell potrays Charles Whitman with an intense and superb performance. Richard Yniguez plays Ramiro Martinez, a young rookie cop who becomes the hero of the day. The movie is gritty and realistic, it really pulls you into the story. It's scary and suspenseful, partly because it's a true story, but mostly because of the intense performances by both Russell (one of his best performances) and Yniguez. Despite it being a bit dated, Deadly Tower is just as powerful as any similar genre movie made today.

Excellent rendition of the original made-for-TV movie! I had, for years, watched the old home-recorded VHS tape of this movie wherein I had attempted to "edit-out" all of those stupid commercials, and not doing too good of a job in the process. When I watched this DVD film, I was SOOOOO happy seeing how it turned out! Wonderful! Yes, I agree that not all of the way things actually went down that day were depicted accurately within this movie; that said, however, it's still reasonably close to detail and was well acted & produced for a "made-for-TV" movie. Well worth the price, I thought!

Very good mid-70's made-for-TV film about the sniper attack in Austin in the 60's. Played realistically with good performances by all. Interesting argument for gun control. With guns readily and easily available at the time the citizenry are able to shoot back at the attacker. But with those same guns so easy to get the killer, in his derangement, was extremely enabled to kill many people. The DVD-R is excellent quality. Highly recommended.

I needed to add a good copy to my video collection. My only previous copy was recorded from television way back. Video quality is excellent, but no extras as can be expected from a made for tv movie.
