Book Description

June 1, 1981
Deadwood, South Dakota, has been a source of American legend for over one hundred years. European exploration, Indian wars, gold booms and busts, presidential visits, frontier shootouts, and the natural beauty of the surrounding Black Hills have all captured the imagination of Americans and foreigners. Deadwood: The Golden Years recreates the town that assimilated all that its geography, gold, natural disasters, and the extremes of human behavior could throw in its way. Deadwood was a microcosm of the American frontier and the gold rush town. This history of Deadwood emphasizes its most volatile period, 1875-1925, with careful scrutiny of before and after.
The author, a western historian and foremost raconteur, carefully separates legend from fact and presents them both: the spirit of Deadwood was real. Witty and sympathetic understanding born of a lifetime in the Black Hills and acquaintance with many of the characters who traipse through the pages give this book a comprehensiveness rarely found. It is a lively, reliable, and sometimes irreverent narrative of Deadwood—the next best thing to having lived there for the last century.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN AMERICAN LEGEND, April 20, 2011
By
This review is from: Deadwood: The Golden Years (Paperback)

Years after purchasing GOLD IN THE BLACK HILLS by Watson Parker, decided also to grab a copy of this book by him.

The author tries to separate the true Deadwood of history from the legend it has become. For most western readers this study will be most comprehensive. The main focus is on the 1875-1925 period but other years are covered as well. Some maps and photographs accompany the book, listed below are the chapters from the book:

Preface
Chapter One: Hope in the Mountains
Chapter Two: Ungodly Mills
Chapter Three: Dust in the Balance
Chapter Four: The Professional Men
Chapter Five: A Boom in Cyanid
Chapter Six: Refractory Ore
Chapter Seven: A Sociable People
Chapter Eight: Fetes Worse than Death
Chapter Nine: The Voice of the People
Notes
Bibliography
Index

This is the story basically of a mining camp that grew to such level it eventually reached 'legend' status and the author pretty much tells it chronologically. Professor Parker is at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosk, and I'll just bet his lecture halls are packed.

The University of Nebraska: Lincoln has chosen an N. C. Wyeth painting for its cover, Wild Bill Hickok at Cards. Nice touch.

Recommended.
