5.0 out of 5 stars The Deaf Jew in the Modern World, January 30, 2007
This review is from: The Deaf Jew in the Modern World (Paperback)
Throughout history, Jews who were born deaf have held a special place in the Jewish community - a place sometimes misunderstood. Recent advances in audiology and in the education of deaf children make it imperative that this ancient issue be clarified in light of modern developments. To assist in bringing the matter to light and to indicate proposed resolutions of problems and misconceptions held by too many for too long, this volume presents a number of viewpoints by a distinguished group of authors.

Four currently active rabbis - David M. Feldman, Schlomo Goren, Elyse Goldstein, and Daniel Grossman - address the religious aspects of prelingual deafness. A century-old sermon by Rabbi Nathan M. Adler, a nineteenth-century British religious leader, and the appended quotations from the Talmud and the reponsa-literature add further historical perspectives.

How do deaf people regard their positions in the Jewish community? The answers come with great authority from four highly regarded deaf Jews: Alexander Fleischman, Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz, Meyer Lief, and the late Dr. Frederick C Schreiber. Their well-reasoned, yet passionate, statements cast this matter in a remarkable new light.

Finally, Profesor Maurice H. Miller, an international authority on audiology, provides technical information that, along with some additional information supplied by the editors, rounds out the presentation of this many-faceted topic.
