5.0 out of 5 stars The Spiritual Side of Deafness, June 19, 2007
By Marie Vernon (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Deaf Ministry is a stunning and eye-opening story from two aspects: First, it is the journey of the Reverend Peggy Johnson who chose the ministry as her career at a time when women were not easuly accepted in such positions. Secondly, it is an in-depth look at the obstacles she faced when she took on the additional challenge of serving the needs of a deaf congregation.
The Reverend Johnson writes about her experiences and the people she serves always with great compassion. The stories she tells range from humorous to heart-wrenching, and the telling is both spirited and spiritual.
A definite "must read" for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of deafness and those who work in that field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable, April 26, 2007
By Leo Yates Jr. (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The author's calling into deaf ministry is inspiring and uplifting. Johnson shares her highs and lows of entering into deaf ministry as she learns about deaf culture and the deaf community, and how learning about both will begin to open the door to deaf ministry. Read how she (& God) turns a small deaf congregation into a thriving congregation that pours God's grace back into the deaf community, not only in Baltimore, but all around the world. You'll read how she struggled to learn the language, you'll see what obstacles she faced not only from congregants, but from church officials as well. Johnson's own faith is challenged, yet she contiues forward as she steps into the role of a servant leader...literally washing the feet of others. Her deaf church was included in the PBS program, "Through Deaf Eyes." Included in the book is a devotional study guide written by Robert L. Walker, which brings sharper insight for the faithful.

Deaf Ministry: Make a joyful silence is a great read! I had a hard time putting it down. Rev. Johnson shows Deaf ministry with all its mountains and valleys in a beautiful light.
