Gr 6-9-Landau covers the causes and prevention of blindness in the U.S. and in developing countries around the world, dispelling such myths as eating carrots being good for the eyes, and reading small print or working in low light being damaging. Deafness explores the causes of hearing loss, coping with the condition, and achievements in various fields of endeavor by individuals who are deaf. The concluding pages examine characteristics of the deaf community and their insistence on respect as a distinct cultural group. Diabetes discusses symptoms, types, treatment, future outlook for those with the disease and concludes with a positive ``can-do'' message. It is similar in scope to Sarah Riedman's Diabetes (Watts, 1980; o.p.) and the Silversteins' Diabetes (Lippincott, 1979; o.p.). Barbara Goodheart's Diabetes (Watts, 1990) includes more about the history of the disease as well as about some of the other topics. Informative, attractive full-color photographs break up the texts. Although some readers will take issue with the use of the word ``illness'' to discuss blindness and deafness, these volumes will serve as introductory material where additional information at this level is needed.-Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School, TX
