Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Dr. Batmanghelidj received his formal medical education at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University. He provides for the layman a clear and comprehensive book on the origins of chronic pain. His clinical and scientific research exposes, for the first time, that recurring "chronic pains" are a signal system of the body indicating severe general or local dehydration. Most of these pains can be relieved simply by drinking water. Instead, however, the patient often receives costly pharmaceutical medications which treat rather than cure.

In this book, back pain and rheumatoid joint pain as indicators of local chronic dehydration are explained. The mechanisms involving the important role of water in holding the spinal column together are discussed. Based on years of detailed study of the human anatomy and the science of physiology, Dr. Batmanghelidj has devised a new exercise approach for the successful hydration of the disc core, the retraction of the displaced discs, and immediate relief of pain, even sciatica. These exercises are clearly explained and demonstrated, and may be the only way to save yourself from the surgeon's knife.

This book is unlike any other "how-to" book on the market. It is an instructive presentation about the very simple way of finding comfort and relief from two of the most commonly occurring pains of the body low back pain and rheumatoid joint pain.

From Scientific American

The book explains simply and professionally for the layman what back pain is. An important book, extraordinarily useful...the sort of news that could change your life. No kidding. Dr. Batmanghelidj has really got hold of something.

More About the Author

"Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D., an internationally renowned researcher, author and advocate of the natural healing power of water, was born in Iran in 1931. He attended Fettes College in Scotland and was a graduate of St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University, where he studied under Sir Alexander Fleming, who shared the Nobel Prize for the discovery of penicillin.

Dr. Batmanghelidj practiced medicine in the United Kingdom before returning to Iran where he played a key role in the development of hospitals and medical centers. He also helped establish sport projects for youth in Iran, including The Ice Palace in Tehran, the first ice skating and sports complex in the Middle East.

When the Iranian Revolution broke out in 1979, Dr. Batmanghelidj was placed in the infamous Evin Prison as a political prisoner for two years and seven months. It was there he discovered the healing powers of water. One night, Dr. B. had to treat a fellow prisoner with crippling peptic ulcer pain. With no medications at his disposal, Dr. B. gave him two glasses of water. Within eight minutes, his pain disappeared. He was instructed to drink two glasses of water every three hours and became absolutely pain free for his four remaining months in the prison. Dr. B. successfully treated 3,000 fellow prisoners suffering from stress-induced peptic ulcer disease with water alone. While in prison he conducted extensive research into the medicinal effects of water in preventing and relieving many painful degenerative diseases. Evin proved an ideal "stress laboratory," and despite his being offered an earlier release, Dr. B. chose to stay an extra four months in prison to complete his research into the relationship of dehydration and bleeding peptic ulcer disease. The report of his findings was published as the editorial of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. The New York Times Science Watch reported this discovery on June 21, 1983.

On his release from prison in 1982, Dr. Batmanghelidj escaped from Iran and came to America. At the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine he began to research the effect of chronic unintentional dehydration on the human body. His findings were published in the Foundation's "Journal of Science in Medicine Simplified" in 1991 and 1992. They can be read on the web site www.watercure.com.

Dr. F. Batmaghelidj wrote his first self-help book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" in 1992, in which he stated that a dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. The body signals its water shortage by producing pain. Dehydration actually produces pain and many degenerative diseases, including asthma, arthritis, hypertension, angina, adult-onset diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis. Dr. B's message to the world is, "You are not sick, you are thirsty. Don't treat thirst with medication."

Dr. F. Batmanghelidj devoted the last 20 years of his life promoting public awareness of the healing powers of water. He appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs and lectured around the world. He has left a body of valuable works of six books and more than a dozen educational audio and video seminars. His work has created an international community that has embraced the natural healing of the water cure. His ground-breaking book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" has been translated into 15 languages and continues to inspire readers all over the world.

Dr. F. Batmanghelidj died of complications from pneumonia on November 15, 2004, in Virginia, U.S.A. He was 73."

This is what he says. "Drink alot more water and your pain will go away". I knew that was his message before I got the book but I was not convinced. The book explains why to drink more water and also offers some exercises that I was not aware of.

And it works. Maybe its a coincidence but I have been trying to recover from a back problem for the last 9 months. In the last two weeks I have noticed a dramatic improvement and I have started to lose weight. It this continues this book is GREAT!!

One drawback is that now I have to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Small price to pay.

Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty!
No joke... as far as I'm concerned my back pain is essentially cured. It took me 3 attempts to get the exercise right . You must follow the directions exactly and rest 24 hrs between attempts. Immediately after the 3rd attempt , I was able to bend down without my knees buckling, and get up from a squatting position with strength in my legs.No pain in the morning. But I do have some pain if I sit in one position for awhile--can deal with that.Physical tx and chiropractic have been helpful but only remedial. This one exercise in the book cured me. Follow directions about diet and water intake.I'm now telling all my friends. Purchase any of author's books as well. Best Rx for staying healthy in case we get national health insurance when we will not have access to anything.
This is an update(November 10,2008). I don't even think of my back anymore.I can sit in any position for any length of time. I still drink alot water but stopped all exercises because I have no pain. If the pain returns I will resume the exercises. This book is the best of all self-help medical books on the market!. A true miracle. Another update(March 17,2009). We had a bad winter and was able to shovel snow without any pain whatsoever. Of course, I did use proper posture. Still no back pain of any sort and that includes from any posture for prolonged time period, Also I can walk as much as I want.
Hello again. It is November 21,2009). This past summer, I began getting 'twinges' in my back. No pain mind you, just a twinge or two. I figured my disc was starting to bulge again. So to play it safe, I did the exercise just once and the twinge vanished immediately after. Still no pain or twinge as of today.I am watching my diet and am drinking just water (except one cup of coffee in the morning) As I said in the beginning of this review, I am cured. Wouldn't you know it, national health care in probably going to crush us but water to the rescue (until that also is taxed along with botox...not funny!)
Hello again and good-bye after this last update. Today is Dec 14,2009. Here in Michigan it has snowed and iced x3 so far and all in the past 7 days. The snow was fluffy one day and slushy and heavy the other, the third was 1/4 inch of melting ice and heavy. I was able to do my snow shoveling by hand without any pain.I have not had any twinges since this past summer. Let me repeat. My back pain is cured because my disc(s) are back in place using this simple exercise. Try it, you'll like it. Au revoir mes amis
Ooops... spoke too soon. See my new review for Your Body's many Cries for Water re my resolution for a stiff neck. My lower back is still cured, though!!
Today is March 25, 2011...No misprint- 2011- and still no back pain or bulging discs.... By anyone's definition, I am still cured. Yippee Kiyyea!!
Addendum- May 14,2011--about one month ago I used this technique x3, spaced 3-4 days apart on my wife's aching back. She still had some lingering but mild pain after the third procedure so I did not do anymore. 2 days ago I asked her how her back was, since she never said anything more about it. She said she has been pain-free for some time now. Nice!!

The "superhero's" stretching is what I call the excersises described in this book, considering the author's last name. My trainer was the one who introduced me to this book. He lent it to me for a couple of days but since I could not finish reading it, I decided to buy it. It's amazing how easy and uncomplicated it is to get rid of my back pain, even if it's for a couple of days. The excersises are simple and quick to do and the reading, although you will find some scientic descriptions, is easy.
