"Fifteen-year-old Deal thinks she’s pretty sophisticated--a winner at the so-called Game of attracting any boy she wants. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9. After her mother dumps her to live with her boyfriend, Deal moves into her grandmother's house and attends a high school with its own ghost. Deal has often played the "Game" in which she seduces different boys. Now, even though she knows she shouldn't, she goes after classmate Mark. Never mind that he has a friendly, also very cool, girlfriend, or that another boy, uncool Laurie, is far more appealing. He is happy, hardworking, fun, and seems to be able to read Deal's mind. Laurie is fascinated by the ghost that resides in the music room, and Deal is drawn into the mystery, which seems to be connected to Gram. This story will appeal to readers who can appreciate the psychological grounding of the ghost in Deal's grandmother's past and the girl's own misery, as well as those who are not yet ready for full-blown horror. The supernatural is never discounted or dispelled; in the final pages, the ghost is banished with a rite incorporating the facts that have come to light. Deal has made steps toward accepting Gram's reserved version of love, her own musical abilities, and her friendship with Laurie. This is a step up from "Fear Street" (Scholastic) in terms of quality of writing and characters, but not as scary as Mary Downing Hahn's Look for Me by Moonlight (Houghton, 1995) or Vivian Vande Velde's Companions of the Night (Harcourt, 1995).?Carol A. From Booklist

Gr. 7-9. Fifteen-year-old Deal thinks she's pretty sophisticated--smooth talking, always in control, and above all, a winner at the so-called Game of attracting any boy she wants. Her composure is shattered, though, when her mother dumps her with a grandmother she barely knows, and Deal finds herself face-to-face with a ghost who calls her by name and seems to be tied to her grandmother's past. She must also handle a new boy, Laurie, who sees through her posturing and helps her recognize that playing the Game isn't satisfying any more. As Deal unravels the story of the ghost, she uncovers some surprising truths about her grandmother and herself. Singer's fast-paced, engrossing novel will sell itself in booktalks, so be prepared for high demand. Chris Sherman

More About the Author

Marilyn Singer was born in the Bronx (New York City) on October 3, 1948 and lived most of her early life in N. Massapequa (Long Island), NY. She attended Queens College, City University of New York, and for her junior year, Reading University, England. She holds a B.A. in English from Queens and an M.A. in Communications from New York University.

In 1974, after teaching English in New York City high schools for several years, she began to write - initially film notes, catalogues, teacher's guides, and film strips. Then, one day, when she was sitting in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, she penned a story featuring talking insect characters she'd made up when she was eight. Encouraged by the responses she got, she wrote more stories, and in 1976, her first book, The Dog Who Insisted He Wasn't, was published by E.P.Dutton & Co.

Since then, Marilyn has published over eighty books for children and young adults. Her genres are many and varied, including realistic novels, fantasies, non-fiction, fairy tales, picture books, mysteries and poetry. She likes writing many different kinds of books because it's challenging and it keeps her from getting bored.

Marilyn currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband Steve; their standard poodle Oggi, seen in the home page photo; a cat named August ; two collared doves named Jubilee and Holiday; and a starling that says, "Hi. How are you? Sweet Birdie. Okay!" Her interests include ballroom/Latin dancing, dog training, reading, hiking, bird-watching, gardening, playing computer adventure games, and going to the movies and the theatre. She's also a major Star Trek fan.

Marilyn is the former host of the AOL Children's Writers Chat and currently co-hosts the Poetry Blast at various conferences. Visit her web site: www.marilynsinger.net.

4.0 out of 5 stars thought-provoking, i suppose, October 9, 2000

This review is from: Deal with a Ghost (Paperback)
this book presents the question: can history repeat itself? i suppose it was thought-provoking on some levels, but it wasn't exactly top-quality literature. a good book for teens, but readers looking for some more elite material should avoid this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very good book, April 26, 2000
This review is from: Deal with a Ghost (Paperback)
This story was very well written and, throughout it, a question was posed. The question was: Can history repeat itself? Continuously throughout the novel you wonder if Deal will make the same mistake in her present life that both her mother and grandmother made in their past lives. As a high school student, I felt that this novel was truthfully written and can easily be compared to the life of either someone who has stole a boy or girlfriend or to someone has lost a boy or girlfriend.
