5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative! To bad it wasn't out when I was 12
I work at a bookstore and I noticed that a lot of young middle school girls were buying this book. So out of curiosity I bought one for myself and took it home. Let me say that it tells you EVERYTHING....Every single question you have about being a teen girl is answered in that book. From your body (and even the yucky parts about it) to your brain (emotional problems)...

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Adult Content
I am the father of two 14yr old girls and I was shocked at the adult content in this "teen" book. I don't believe in hiding things from our teens. I just think there should be a warning label on books with such sexual explicit material, like currently used with music and movies. Parents have a right to be warned about the material their teens will be exposed...

I work at a bookstore and I noticed that a lot of young middle school girls were buying this book. So out of curiosity I bought one for myself and took it home. Let me say that it tells you EVERYTHING....Every single question you have about being a teen girl is answered in that book. From your body (and even the yucky parts about it) to your brain (emotional problems) and this isn't a little corny valley girl book. And now that I am 17 I thought I knew it all, I thought it was almost over because when I turned 18 being a teen girl would turn into a legal adult girl. But even my stubborn self learned a great deal. It has a lot of pictures and descriptions and comments from other teen girls. If your a parent I suggest you buy this for your young preteen (even 10 year olds!) we all need to be prepared for this time in our lives and there are some things you just can't talk about with your parents... In a nutshell this is one of the best books I've ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT! (for younger girls, that is), December 29, 1999

I bought the Gurl book after knowing about the Gurl website for quite some time. Luckily, this book fills it all in. I was impressed by all the information on everything a girl needs to know, all about sex, pregnancy, depression, parents, etc. etc. I think I'm maybe a little too old for the book now (I'm 18) but I'd totally recommend it for 12-16 year-olds. Some parents might not like the content (it discusses oral sex, etc.) but a girl's gonna learn about it some time, so it might as well be in a healthy, factual way. Definitely worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars For ages 13 and up, I'd say, June 16, 2004
Keep in mind that this book is not something to read cover-to-cover like a novel - it is much more of a reference book. Basically, it talks about sex, puberty, and changes in the body, as well as drugs, a bit of peer pressure, and certain kinds of mental illnesses. Still, parents need to know what they are buying their girls. My mom bought it for me while I was away at camp and for whatever reason, shipped it to me while I was residing up in the Pocono Mountains. The girls in my bunk went crazy and laughed hysterically over the pictures. Then, they proceeded to pass it around the bunk and read passages out loud. Every once in awhile, a counselor would find the book wide open on her pillow, flipped to a page with some diagram on it.

Yes, THOSE kind of diagrams. Body parts.

This is info every girl ought to know about, however. Nothing really ought to be deemed controversial here. This book basically talks about life, or something like it. What goes on in this book is happening, as I speak, to girls everywhere. If you've got qualms about graphic CARTOON pictures, then do not by this book. And for mothers reading this, I suggest your girl be in the eighth grade. Or if she's 12 and mature...what the hell. They'll find out everything here sooner or later!

5.0 out of 5 stars From a mans point of view... and excellent book!, June 20, 2000
I read this book cover to cover with my wife before giving it to our 11 year old daughter. If I were to change one thing I would put it in a three ring binder so we could remove some parts such as the oral sex section until she was a little older. However my wife and I are very open minded and we actually went through the book section by section with our daughter and asked her to skip those sections until she was a little older. She even closed the sections with a paperclip for us.

Our daughter is very intelligent and very curious. I can tell you right now that I would much rather have her learn these things from this book than from someone on the street!

I recommend this book for anyone with daughters in the age from 11-18. I also recommend "Our Bodies Ourselves" for ALL women AND men to read.

If you really don't want your daughter reading those sections, then hit them with a permanent marker, or do like that other woman did and rip the pages right out, but don't pass over this excellent and informative resource for young women!..

5.0 out of 5 stars It is about time!, April 10, 2003

I bought this book for my thirteen year old daughter. She has had my copy of Our Bodies, Our Selves for several months now, but that book is aimed towards an older female. This is the perfect book to answer all those teen questions that arise.

Yes, parts of it are blunt and the female authors pull no punches - that is what I liked about it. Obviously, many of these questions are taken directly from the web site. It's not as if the authors attempted to find the subjects which would offend parents the most!

They are questions asked by curious teens and I, for one, am thrilled that those questions are being answered by females who are mature, yet understanding. Too many parents choose to act as if budding sexuality will go away if they discourage it...wake up, people. It's biological and you can demand abstinence all you want; it doesn't mean your child will listen.

I am extremely open to any questions my children want to ask me about sex, or anything else for that matter. Still, there are questions girls just don't feel comfortable asking adults in their family...that is the reason I purchased this book.

Yes, they describe how to perform oral sex, but they also discuss receiving it. I learned it from my Mother's Helen Gurley Brown book long before I ever actually became sexually active. Just because a girl is curious, doesn't mean she's going to have sex immediately. In fact, I think it makes them LESS likely to do it strictly out of curiosity!

Thank you, ladies, for writing this...where were you when I was a teen? I will definitely be saving this one for my other two girls..and my boy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for teens!, April 25, 2001
I purchased a copy of this book with the intention of giving it to a friend's teenage daughter. While flipping throught the pages, I was delightedly shocked at all of the topics covered from drugs to dating to mental health. In this age of media, kids have much more to deal with and this guide successfully navigates one through the muddy waters of growing up. Even I learned quite a bit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written and put together, December 12, 2000
By A Customer
ok, this book was informative and very fun to read. .... My parents didn't know what I was getting, and I sort of didn't either. It seemed mature because of its explicit ... material .... . My parents looked at it and were very uneasy with me. I was, of course, totally embarassed. If a daughter or girl wants to read this or you want to give this to her, I do recommend you be aware of the material first. Although some can be suggestive, the rest is very informative in a fun way. The authors put together advice and opinions ... from girls and there were many funfacts ... The information was very well put together and really helps the modern teen girl of today. And its not all about sexuality and body, there are spiritual, family, friends, and school issues, and mind and brain info that is discussed. ... I was mature enough to handle it. Because of that,I found it very fun and informative. I would recommend this book ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good..., August 8, 2000
Okay, I'll start by saying that this book is definitely blunt. But... in honesty, as embarrassing as a lot of the information is, its very useful and helpful. Being a teenager myself, I think that every teenage girl can benefit from this book. My mom skimmed through it a little with me and she thought that although some parts were unesecary, she felt it important that I knew the majority of what was in it. It really answers a lot of questions that you may be too scared to ask. I really recommend it for teenage girls (probably the older, the better!)
