Book Description

Cherub August 2005
CHERUB is an elite intelligence organization that employs agents under the age of seventeen. Because of their age, CHERUB agents have an unparalleled advantage in the realm of espionage: No one would ever suspect teenagers to be agents. Rigorously trained and exceptionally talented, CHERUB agents will stop at nothing to accomplish their missions.

James is on his most daring mission yet: to smack down the world’s most powerful drug lord. It means hitting the streets, where the dealers work, and it’s a vicious business. But James is going to take it down...from the top.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9–Cherubs are a supersecret division of the British security service MI5. They are highly trained, orphaned children, ages 10-17, who work as spies to investigate terrorists and international drug dealers. In this adventure, readers follow 12-year-old James, who is on a mission to bring down one of Britain's largest drug dealers, the Keith Moore Gang. He and three other agents, along with two adults to supervise and provide cover as their adoptive parents, move into a neighborhood near the Moore family. James and his friends have assignments to get close to Moore's kids. He also gets a job delivering cocaine, which earns him the trust of both Junior Moore and his father. The story moves quickly with lots of action and suspense. Although the premise is highly implausible, the author makes the plot as realistic as possible. James is a convincing character who becomes more appealing as the story progresses. A potential problem is a statement in the Cherub briefing material that says cocaine is not addictive.–Ellen A. Greever, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER!, July 14, 2008
This book is not one to disappoint. In fact I am a slow reader and I was able to read this book all the way through on a five hour flight! Muchamore's best writing characteristic is his characters they are deep and REAL which makes this book and all his others excellent beyond comparison. In fact I ordered some of his other books from England because they were not available in US.

I love this series. The charachters are well developed, the vocabulary is rich, and the adventure is high, and it never gets boring. I reccomend this series for anyone between 12 and 18.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the suspense?, September 9, 2011
This review is from: The Dealer (Cherub) (Paperback)
I would agree with an earlier reviewer that these books are not suitable for readers under the age of about 14. There is a lot of supposedly 'real life' teenage interaction. (Some of it seems fairly realistic but actually some bits of it are a little embarrassing to be honest.)

But if you are over 14 or buying a book for a teenager then the CHERUB series is quite good. The first book ('The Recruit') is by far the best and from then on they get gradually less good throughout the series. This is book 2, so it's still worth reading.

The trouble is that the author tries to keep everything realistic for child spies, but for most of the missions this means that the only thing the child spies can actually do is break into someone's house and do a lot of photocopying. I don't know about you, but I don't read spy or action books so I can read about photocopying. If I wanted photocopying I'd go and find a job in an office.

So although this series has a strong concept, there is a lack of suspense in the plot and a lack of good, gripping action sequences. For fans of suspense, spies and action - and also for younger readers - I would recommend the better books: Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz and the Jimmy Coates books by Joe Craig.
