When bill collectors start calling my first reaction is to cringe away from the phone. It seems so much easier to ignore the problem and hope it, along with the calls, and my debt, goes away. Of course we all know this will never happen and so we do have to deal with it. I wrote this book based on my experience as a debtor and a collector. I am hoping that by being on both sides of the fence my story can help you deal with collectors who break the law, can help you learn how to get out of debt and give you the tools and resources you need to deal with collectors, clear up your debt and move on with your life. Being in debt is very stressful and normally people go into debt when they are already over stressed – for me it was during a divorce which was almost too much to handle, and then I not only had to deal with getting a divorce, but working full time with two kids, not receiving child support or help with the children, balancing the house, pets, kids, jobs, bills and divorce proceedings all while being an emotional mess and having to talk to bill collectors because I no longer made enough money to pay my bills.

I found myself in debt when I was getting a divorce and suddenly found myself having to learn everything I could about dealing with debt, and how to pay it off while still paying living expenses for myself and my two children while having one less income.   I was married for 10 years and had two children.  When I was getting divorced I was living in the house with the kids and working full time.  I felt like things couldn't get any worse with money, since I only had my income and still had to pay for upkeep on the house as well as all the other expenses. 
In this short book I share my personal story and how I pulled myself out of a bad situation. I hope my story can inspire you to do the same.

I met Michelle Dunn in the late 90s on a discussion group of women entrepreneurs. At that time, she had just begun her Collection Agency. Like any budding small business owner, she worked hard to make it grow and turn it into a success. And that's what she did.

When Michelle asked me to read this book, I had no idea what to expect. From my experience with her over the years as a professional who knew the collections side of the business inside out (and whom I sent business owners seeking help to), I had absolutely no clue of the challenges she had personally faced as she struggled to help her family survive and thrive -- while dealing with her circumstances head on.

I have always had a high regard for Michelle and this book helps me truly understand how hard she has worked to become the expert she is today -- admired, celebrated and honored by the Collections Industry. And it is well deserved.

This is an emotional book, written from Michelle's experience on both sides of a debt crisis. It's an easy and fast read, and will teach you a lot about what can (and can't) be done if you find yourself in a credit mess. I love that it is practical (communicate with your debtors, be nice, take action) and can be used by pretty much anyone.

It's worth the read 1) for consumers -- if you find yourself in a situation where you are unable to pay all of your bills, and 2) for small business owners -- to prepare yourself for the day you will have to attempt to collect from someone who is not paying.

Being a collector myself for the past 20 years, and a consumer all my life; I highly recommend this book for everyone. Like Michelle, I've also been on both sides of the fence (meaning I've been in debt, as well as collected debt from those who owed the companies I worked for), and this book offers great practical advice for collectors and consumers alike.

Thank you Michelle for putting out this very informative and helpful guide!

In 1998, when Michelle was getting a divorce and had 2 small children, she started a collection agency from home leaving her full time job as a credit manager 6 months later. Her agency did very well and grew over the next 8 years until Michelle sold it to write full time. Michelle knew what business owners needed and had already written a couple of books that were selling well. "But it was still a huge leap", she says, "I was a single mom with two sons." I started putting together my ideas, set up a office in my home, and used the income from book sales to fund publishing more books.

That same year Michelle self published 4 books and e-books before landing her first book contract with Entrepreneur Press to write The Ultimate Credit and Collections Handbook, the check IS in the mail. She then self published a couple more business books before getting a book deal with John Wiley & Sons Publishing, for her first hardcover book, The Guide to Getting Paid, weed out bad paying customers, collect on past due balances, and avoid bad debt.

Today Michelle Dunn continues to write columns and books and presents webinars sharing how business owners can limit credit risk in this economy as well as learn how they can prevent some bad debt, and collect from past due customers.
