Book Description

The fictitious town of Barbourville, Tennessee, is the setting for this small-town romance. Other Carolynn Carey books set in Barbourville include the first in the series, A Summer Sentence, and then Falling for Dallas.

In Dealing with Denver, freelance writer Mattie Meadows has found an excellent excuse to visit Barbourville, Tennessee. She’s been assigned to write an article about a local authentic cottage for a magazine on cottage vacations.

But her real reason for visiting the small town is much less transparent, and if she succeeds in her quest, some of the most prominent citizens of Barbourville may very well become her enemies.

Attorney Denver Vance is using Barbourville as a stopover on his way from Florida to his home in Chicago. When he arrives late one evening after all of his Barbourville relatives are in bed, he decides to spend the night in his brother’s rental cottage. He knows Dallas doesn’t plan to rent the cottage over the summer, so he’s less than pleased when an attractive but prickly female meets him on the front porch and tells him to go away.

Once their initial misunderstanding is resolved, Mattie talks Denver into helping her with her search. Both are aware that their time in Barbourville is limited, and although neither expects to fall in love, they do. Then Mattie succeeds in her quest and old Barbourville secrets come to light, secrets that could very well destroy Mattie’s and Denver’s chances for happiness.

Will Mattie and Denver find a way to mesh their very different worlds and settle down in Barbourville? Or will the secrets they’ve uncovered forever taint their future in the small town?

Editorial Reviews

"Dealing with Denver is a well written story of two people at a crossroads. I would recommend you pick up this sweet read." -

From the Author

In the multi-faceted Romance genre, Dealing with Denver is considered a "sweet" or "traditional" romance. That is, although the hero and heroine meet, are attracted to each other, and fall in love while overcoming various obstacles, the physical side of their relationship is confined mostly to kisses. Thus, this book would be equally appropriate for both adults and for young adults.
Dealing with Denver, which is set in a fictional town in Tennessee, was a 2010 Award of Merit winner (Southern theme) in the Virginia Romance Writers' HOLT Medallion contest that recognizes "Excellence in Romance Writing."

5.0 out of 5 stars Dealing With Denver March 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mattie and Denver are visitors to Barbourville, TN. He is visiting one of his fellow triplets who married a local girl and moved there. Mattie is seeking her birth mother while writing a travel article about the cottage where Denver is staying.

Together the join forces to find her birth mother.

This enchanting story is a wonderful spring read. The characters are well drawn as is McCrary, County, TN. It was lovely to visit characters from earlier books.

This is a wonderful book for mothers and tween daughters to share. There is no violence, sex or objectionable words. This would also be a good book for book-clubs to discuss looking for birth parents or not looking for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from a former classmate in TN September 21, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The author has again written an interesting story and introduced a new character, Mattie Meadow, to her readers. The book truly illustrates small town USA as it actually exists. The book flows well and the plot moves nicely. I really appreciate that Carolynn has lots of different characters in her previous books who are interwoven and reappear in this book. I would recommend reading the author's two other books to gain a more indepth understanding of the characters. This book can be read quickly and I look forward to the author's next book on Barbourville, TN.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Story that Touches Your Heart December 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dealing with Denver is the perfect blend of small-town charm and all the best that families have to offer. Mattie, the heroine, charms the reader immediately. The plot twists keep the reader guessing until the end. The characters and setting remind the reader that times can be simpler and that happiness is within our grasp. A charming, engaging read that I highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Denver October 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I felt this book had a better and more emotional storyline than Falling for Dallas. I gave it 4 stars, but it's more a 3.5 stars for me. I wish there was more time spent developing the relationship. It starts out with a physical attraction; they share a few kisses here and there; then they get married. They also drink a lot of decaf coffee.

I love reading The Barbourville Series. It is wonderful getting to know the citizens of Barbourville. A small town in Tennessee has as many "secrets" as any other small town in America.

More About the Author

Three of Carolynn Carey's manuscripts were finalists in the Golden Heart contest of the Romance Writers of America before her first book, A SUMMER SENTENCE, was published in 2005. A SUMMER SENTENCE, a contemporary romance set in a fictional small town named Barbourville, won an Award of Merit in the HOLT Medallion contest and finaled in the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence contest. FALLING FOR DALLAS, the second in the Barbourville series, was also an award winner. The third Barbourville book, DEALING WITH DENVER, was recognized with an Award of Merit in the HOLT Medallion contest. Most recently, both THE FORGOTTEN CHRISTMAS TREE (a Barbourville novel) and MY CUPCAKE, MY LOVE were awarded first place by readers judging the HOLT Medallion contest for 2014.

Carolynn was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee, which explains her pleasure in writing contemporary romances set in Tennessee towns. But as a long-time fan of Georgette Heyer, she also enjoys reading and writing about the Regency period in England. Carolynn's first published Regency, COMPROMISING SITUATIONS, won the National Readers' Choice Award in the Regency category and the 2008 Laurie Award for Published Authors. Her novel entitled MY ELUSIVE COUNTESS is set in the Regency category, as is THE SECRET CHRISTMAS CIPHERS, which won an Award of Merit in the 2013 HOLT Medallion contest.
