Review

"In her new book, Dealing with Diabetes Burnout, don't expect a long, boring lecture from Ginger. Instead, you will feel like a dear friend has taken a seat next to you, laughs with you and cries with you, and gives you a great big hug. Ginger takes on one of the most important subjects in diabetes, the oft-ignored emotional side, and tells you how it really is in plain language. She lets you know that yes, diabetes can be tough, and she shares with you some great ideas that can help you move forward and succeed with diabetes. Boy, did I enjoy this book, and I expect you will, too!"- Dr. William Polonsky, Ph.D., CDE, Founder & President of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute

"At first I thought, 'Why would anyone who's burned out want to read a book about burnout?' But this book is really fun! Ginger has a great sense of humor. She puts a smile back on your face and gets you energized to deal with diabetes in a whole new (and realistic) way." -Gary Scheiner MS, CDE, owner and clinical Director, Integrated Diabetes Services, author of Think Like a Pancreas, and 2014 AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year

'Dealing with Diabetes Burnout' is a book which looks at diabetes burnout as a normal part of dealing with diabetes and explores ways in which to get out of that burnout 'funk' you may occasionally find yourself in. Ginger delves into how to dealing with burnout around food choices, blood sugars, and exercise. She also gives advice on how you can talk with family and friends about how to show their support. Throughout, she lets you know that you aren't a 'bad' diabetic for feeling burned out and validates the value of every good choice (no matter how small) made in relation to diabetes self-care.

The only thing I would have liked to see more of was an in-depth look at why many teenagers and young adults go into a burnout that manifests itself as 'denial' of their condition, and how best to break free of that (it's something I personally struggled with for many years).

Overall, a great book for helping anyone who might be feeling a bit lost, unmotivated, etc. with their diabetes self-care right now, anyone who has felt that way in the past, or anyone who may feel it in the future.........in short, ANY person with diabetes!

Ginger Vieira's new book "Dealing with Diabetes Burnout: How to Recharge and Get Back on Track When You Feel Frustrated" is the most realistic book for people with diabetes who want to feel understood and learn tips to help them thrive. Not only do we have Ginger's brilliant words, but 25+ of my favorite diabetes advocates (and me) contributed our experiences. I am reading this book now and am loving it! Ginger is friendly and supportive, besides eminently knowledgeable. This is advice *every* person with diabetes needs at *any* point in their journey. Buy it for someone you know and feel free to buy one for yourself. This book is not only perfect for those with D, it's the perfect book for a non-D family member to read in order to understand what people with diabetes are feeling on a daily basis. Congrats Ginger!

This is a great book for Diabetics. In reading this book I had so many emotions while reading it. You sometimes feel like you are alone with these ups and downs of diabetes and from reading this you find a whole community which is going through the same thing. It is so wonderful to read others struggles and the solutions to help handle the guilt, pain, downs and burn out. Ginger is quite the expert on not only how people are feeling but finding the bottom line reason for it. Such an amazing book. I will be reading this one again and again.

I started off well on my new regimen, after I was diagnosed with diabetes. Then, I began to get down, as I realized this is basically how the rest of my life goes now. I saw some good recommendations on this book, and picked it up on a special. How you take it will vary by your personality -- I found it a little "rah-rah!" sometimes. But I'm glad I found it. I definitely helped me come to terms with some of the issues that were worrying me, and helped me realize that the only successful approaches have to be long-term strategies. If you're feeling a bit worn down and depressed by a diabetic lifestyle, I think it might help you too.

Ginger - you MUST know that YOU are changing peoples' lives. You simply must. You have given validation and voice to feelings, emotions and the unexpressed dysfunctions of living with Diabetes. As a Type 1 for 30 years (diagnosed when I was 10 yrs old), I have navigated my life with D sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously but never for a second 'allowing' myself to 'burnout'. I didn't know it was an option. I had trained myself so hard for so long that letting go, easing off - or heaven forbid - actually congratulating myself on efforts made were unheard of. It had been in my constitution that by praising myself, I'd become complacent - I'd fall into a crumpled heap if I 'stopped trying so hard'.

Your motivating, understanding words jump off the pages of this book and I have grabbed and ran with them! Who knew??!! Who knew that I could allow myself to look at the numbers on my meter and not mentally or physically berate myself because of them? Who knew that a perspective existed that it was ok to admit that D is excruciatingly hard and it's ok to admit feeling challenged? Having extra sleep without feeling guilty? New to me! Scheduling a cheat day, relax day or holiday?? What the! The list goes on...

A similar feeling to that of when I first went onto a pump - I now have wings. I feel liberated, exhilarated, positive and armed with a fresh set of sparkly tools in my life toolbox. THANK YOU. Cannot wait for your next book. -- Vanessa Locke
