Great beginner instrument,

This review is from: Dean E09 Edge Bass, Mahogany Finish (Electronics)
I've been learning to play bass with this model for about a year and a half, and I enjoy it thoroughly. It's lighter than some instruments, but still has enough mass that it has a good tone. The neck is maybe not as slender as some fancier, faster basses, but it's still quite comfortable. It stays in tune well, and I've never had any troubles with the knobs or electronics.
With only a single pickup, and just knobs for volume and treble, you don't have much flexibility in sound. If you're just learning or playing for fun, this isn't much of an issue. The bass sounds great for a variety of jazz, blues and rock. One person I play with thinks the tone from this bass is nicer than one of his that cost about eight times as much. A couple of other thoughts... You'll want to find a local guitar store to help you make adjustments periodically (and perhaps with initial setup), or learn to do it yourself. I use a Behringer practice amp, and it's partially responsible for the good tone that I seem to get. Finally, I rarely use a pick - if that's more your style, the lack of a pick guard might be an issue for you.

Why not step up to Dean Edge 10a with active electronics?! You will get two pick-ups and way more tone options for $149!!! The 09 is ok for a throw in the trunk type bass but for a few bucks more you can get so much more. BTW, my son has a black 09 and a black 10a so we have played/heard both side by side. To put it in perspective we bought a beater 09 of CL for $25 and are in the process of defretting it as a first time experiment. The 09 is a great candidate for something like that where a mistake won't hurt too bad. You should be able to pick up a black 09 for around $100 new. Maybe the natural look is worth the extra to you.

Great value for a beginner bass,

I paid under a hundred bucks. With a single passive pickup this isn't a high end bass, but I hadn't played in over 40 years and it lets me get back into music cheap. Good looking unit, good build quality. Wish it had flat wounds as the OEM strings are a bit buzzy, but if I get into anything other than hobby playing I'll make the investment. All in all it's a respectable deal and I'm happy.

At first, when I took it out of the packaging and plugged it in......DOA! No sound at all. Took it to a guitar shop, they opened the panel in the back and found out that there was some shoddy soldering and defective mini-pots that had a bad connection. They did some minor soldering and adjustments and it works fine now. The guy at the shop who fixed it said that Dean guitars tended to have this issue. I had bad luck and got a lemon. Luckily, it was an easy fix and he didn't charge me.Also, the strings were too low to the fret board(low action). When you plucked the strings, it would rattle against the frets. They adjusted the neck, so that the strings don't rattle any more. I haven't learned how to do this myself yet. When buying any guitar online, it's a crap shoot. When you buy a guitar at a shop or online, you'll inevitably have to bring it in to a shop for adjustments anyway, if you don't know how to do it yourself. Pros: - Once working, bass sounds great. Nice tone control from clean bass sound to a bit of "growl" and everything in between - Nice looking. Mahogany finish has a distinctive look that grows on you. I admit, I was a bit skeptical from the pictures on Amazon, but seeing it firsthand, it is a beautiful guitar. Cons: - Poor quality control at Dean factory. Possibility you could get what I got, and have to do some fixing. - Only one passive pickup. If you want another pickup, or some active pickups, you'll have to pay more.

Got as gift and love it.,

A friend surprised me with this base as a gift, and I love it. I'm primarily a guitarist, and wanted one around for house jams. I replaced the stock strings (Too funky for me-unless you want everything to sound like a Seinfeld transition) with ghs black nylon tape wounds. The thing sounds more like an upright bass now, and looks fantastic with black strings against the mohogany finish.

Awesome Bass, Awesome Tone,

I started playing bass probably a year and a half or two years ago. I played two friends basses because I didn't have my own until I saved up enough money to buy my own and purchased the Dean Edge 09. This is a great bass that has good balance, isn't too heavy, and has good heavy tones. Awesome if you play heavy metal, nu metal or even death metal. The body isn't actually Mahogany as the description says, but it's stained to look like it and makes it look pretty cool. The only thing I would recommend is switching out the strings because as you probably know, stock strings usually aren't the best things under the sun. I'd highly recommend this if you're wanting to learn or are starting to learn bass, or even if you're a well rounded player (if you are a seasoned player I would recommend you switching out the pickup as well). Rock on!

its pretty! the single pickup has a tone control with a wide range, I get all sorts of musical tones from my Dean 09. I have several others from peavey, fender, schecter and THIS ONE IS a favorite already! its lightweight, has GREAT bass sound, and its what I needed for a ramones cover band as the bass does not overpower as do my schecters... the finger board is comfortable. I would most def recommend this bass! it makes me want to REALLY PLAY!

Good beginners bass. Got this for christmas about a year ago. I have only had one problem, the quarter in. jack came loose and a wire tore so I soldered it and it worked for about a month then it went again. When I went in to take a look two wires had disconnected from the pots so I just went down to radio shack and bought a pack of 3 1/4 in. jacks, changed the wiring to the pick-up and pots and it has worked fine ever since. Good tone. I like to use it for slapping but hammer-ons are a bit tough on it. Also having the single soap bar type pickup right in the center gets in the way a bit when slapping but other than that a good bass. Nice for slower and calmer music but it is also real good for heavy metal. Nice for begginers but if not buying for a begginer then I would suggest looking elsewear.

I bought the Dean Edge 09 Bass w/ Mahogany finish. This guitar is surprising nice. The sound is clean and mellow, no distortion of any kind. The strings are fine, this came with roundwound strings which are great for playing louder and heavier, but have more finger noise when you slide your fingers. I plan to change over to groundwound or flatwound for lower tone and less finger noise. The guitar is sturdy and modest looking, just clean. The tuner knobs are as basic as they come, just volume and tone, but they work well. There were No guitar strap or pick included, but it does come with the cord. On the back of the guitar, the small (tuner knob) cover plate is cheap plastic with protective film and the screws holding it on are not flush mount. This was the only unsightly thing about the guitar, but it's not really noticeable and easy to remedy. Some stained balsa wood or a mahogany craft plank would look much better. The neck appears to be maple and mahogany, it has mother of pearl inlays. The guitar looks and sounds great and has gotten a lot of good compliments from my friends. The only other thing is, it has no guitar case or stand. It comes in a cardboard "Dean" box, which is shipped in another huge Amazon cardboard box, which arrived in perfect condition.
