If you're on the fence about ordering this guitar, let me put a couple of worries to rest for you. This is a really, high-quality instrument. I was scared ordering one sight-unseen, but bit the bullet and am really happy about it. This may not matter to you, but it's important to me... this guitar is NOT made in China. Mine had "Indonesia" on the back of it's headstock, and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I don't know if all of them will be, but I sure hope so!

So, the two characteristics that can be discussed in text are quality and features, so that's how I'll approach this. The rest is personal preference.

Quality:

The guitar feels really solid, and eerily light. It's a lot lighter than it looks. There were no, and I mean NO, buzzing frets, and the guitar seemed "set up" upon arrival. It really was almost even in tune! The neck was straight and needed no adjusting. There were no wobbly or loose knobs, the pickup toggle is firm... everything just breathes quality. The top edge of the fretboard on mine (where the small dots are) has this beautiful swirl in the wood grain that makes me feel lucky, because I'm sure that it's unique to mine.

Features:

The most distinguisting feature, of course, is the graphic, and it really is killer. The Mustaine series really do have high-quality graphics as opposed to a few others. The black hardware is nice, especially the grover tuners. The pickups really surprised me. I really love the way they sound (I guess I should tell you that I don't really care for active pickups.) and I like them better than the Mustaines in my Rust in Peace signature.

I bought this guitar after a 5 year hiatus from playing. I had previously played guitar for about 15 years and had generally played Jackson and Epiphone Flying V & Explorer variations in the same price range as this guitar. The reason I gravitated toward the Mustaine model, besides being a huge Megadeth fan, is that Dave actually uses the Korean models which means they must be made well. After hitting the first power chord and botched scale run, I knew this guitar was the best sounding and feeling instrument I've ever owned.

Just what I wanted. The only thing is that one of the nobs for the straps wasn't screwed in so I had to do it myself. But other than that it has great sound.

Ok, let me preface this by saying that I'm disabled and that this affected why I chose this guitar. I previously had an Ibanez Artist 500 EMG with EMG 81 /60s in the Les Paul style single cut guitar. I loved the sound, especially the EMG 60. In the neck; and the build quality of the Ibanez. But the neck was just way too thick and not playable for me. So I thought I would give this Mustaine AOD2 a try since I already owned a Dean Custom 350 Floyd and was very happy with it. First, the sound. The sound is great! I was really worried I would have to swap out pups with some Duncans or EMGs. Boy was I wrong. Dean has done a great job matching pups with this guitar. You can play anything you like on this axe from screaming metal to ultra cleaned up pop, the DMT pups just work. The neck pup is smooth and creamy like butter. Just like the EMG 60, without the problems of active pups. I would never think of changing pups. Second, playability. The neck is simply awesome! The D shaped Mustaine soeced, is thin enough for me to get around on, yet it has "ledges" to give your hand a reference point. Best neck I've played. Love the C shaped neck on my 350 but this is much better. The action is nice and low and the combination of mahogany, pups, and string thru body give this guitar sustain for days. Lastly, build quality. This is a rock solid guitarvthatis amazingly light. The fit and finish are perfect. The only thing I did was out on my own strings and it was ready to roll. While the custom Mustaine graphic is wicked, my wife even liked it. I do wish were some more traditional color options. Like flame maple top with trans color finishes. But that is being picky. If you can still get it for $399 do it! I paid a lot more for mine.
