Good book in the series, but not the very best.,
This review is from: Dear Diary, I'm Dead (Nightmare Room #5) (Paperback)
Alex likes to bet. It's his habit, and it often gets the better of him. He wants to be a millionaire when he grows up, and he can't wait to be one. But in school he likes to compete, too. He can't take the fact that a girl in his class can be so much better then him. So when his teacher asks him to write a diary, he's going to prove that he really can be the best in the class. But when he finds a strange, old diary in his basement, everything changes. This diary can predict the future -- and soon, Alex is winning every bet in the school. His peers think he can predict the future. And he really can -- and it's all because of his mysterious secret diary. Alex wants to get more and more money, but sometimes it's better not to know the future. Because the future can contain very unwanted surprises. I liked The Nightmare Room #5: Dear Diary, I'm Dead by R.L. Stine, but it wasn't the best because of the ending. That was just too expecting of R.L. Stine, reflecting his poor Goosebumps writing. But it was still very enjoyable, and a lot of fun to read.

One of the best Nightmare Room books.,
This review is from: Dear Diary, I'm Dead (Nightmare Room #5) (Paperback)
Twelve-year-old Alex Smith is always making bets with his friends and classmates, most of which he loses. The stakes are raised, however, when he bets Tessa, a girl who is in several of classes, that his diary, written for extra credit, will receive a higher grade than hers. What sets this bet apart from the others is that Alex bet Tessa $100. Now he's desperate. However, when he gets home and finds in his new desk a diary with an entry written by him for tomorrow, it feels as if his luck has changed. Suddenly he knows the future - and can win virtually any bet. Soon he's winning bets left and right. What Alex doesn't realize is that knowing the future comes with a price he may not be prepared to pay. This was one of my favorite books in the Nightmare Room series, topped only by Locker 13. I'd highly reccomend it to all R. L. Stine fans.

OK BOOK,
This review is from: The Nightmare Room #5: Dear Diary, I'm Dead (Kindle Edition)
There were 2 things I really didn't like about the book. 1st the title really gave away some of the parts of the book. 2nd the ending was really confusing and I didn't understand it at all. Over all, this book is a so-so book.

This was the first book i ever read from ''The Nightmare Room'', and i can say that its pretty good. I didint even like horror books when i got it, but when i started reading it, it just changed my life. After this book i started getting more interested in other books, and The Nightmare Room turned out to be my favorite collection of books ever. Today im still a fanatic for these books, and i really recommend you get this book for you or your son or daughter over the age of 9. This book has an interesting story of Horror and Suspense.

I Bet Ya You'll Be Scared!,

This review is from: Dear Diary, I'm Dead (Nightmare Room #5) (Paperback)
This is the fifth book in the Nightmare Room Series by R.L. Stein and in this volume we meet Alex Smith, student, son, friend and most importantly a boy who likes things to be exciting...and of course he likes to bet, he'll be five bucks on just about anything. The problem is that he LOVES to bet how something is going to turn out but he's rarely EVER right, in fact, he's constantly losing to Tessa Wayne (his nemesis) despite his best friends Chip and Shawn warning him to stop before he goes too far.
As we join the story, Alex bets Tessa that his diary for extra credit in English class will be more exciting than hers (and get a better grade). She's the better student and ALWAYS wins the bets...so the contest is on. He rushes home and finds that his mother has gotten him an old desk...just what he needs; even better he discovers there's an old blank diary in one of the drawers. He sets it aside...but when he comes back to it later, there is an entry! It's in HIS handwriting and it tells him the winner of the next day's basketball game and other details that he just KNOWS he can win bets with...and he does. This diary is a dream come true...or is it? Initially he rushes upstairs each night after dinner to find out what's going to happen and what he can bet on or use to his advantage...but pretty soon the diary is giving out cryptic details like him getting hit by a car and other dangerous and outrageous things...and even more frightening, they start to come true! Will he live to read another entry? You'll have to read to find out what special terror the Nightmare Room has in store for Alex and I bet he's not going to like it! As with others in this series, there is a twist at the end which has a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits for kids feel to it that is just about perfect for this type of story! Of the five I've read so far, this is probably the best especially if the reader is able to suspend belief adequately and really imagine what it would feel like if this were happening to them. The events themselves, as written seem a bit hokey, but when taken at face value would be genuinely frightening and bewildering. The twist at the end is the kind that makes you kind of do a double take and it strikes me as the type of ending for a book where you'd like to have a bunch of your friends reading the same book so you could talk about and speculate on what the ending REALLY meant. Overall, this book like most of Stine's writing is short on the character development...all of them are pretty much caricatures of personality types and the plot moves forward a very quick pace which sometimes leaves the reader wanting for more details than are there. In the end, they are entertaining above anything else and Dear Diary, I'm Dead leaves the reader with much to discuss if he or she is reading this with friends or for a class discussion. Additionally, like most of the other books it has a moral...it's twisted around and morbid, but it's there and gives the story an additional layer for the reader to enjoy. I give it three stars; it's entertaining, engaging and genuinely creepy but not great literature.

It Was... Okay,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dear Diary, I'm Dead (Nightmare Room #5) (Paperback)
This book is about a kid named Alex Smith who finds a diary in an old desk. Later Alex finds that all of the entries were for the next day. They are also in his handwriting but he didn't do it. Soon Alex realizes that the diary is never wrong. And it doesn't always predict good things.
I think the theme is do not trust what everyone tells you. If Alex would not have trusted the diary, the bad things would not have happened. I like hat Alex likes to bet, but I don't think he should take it so far. My only question is why it started all over again at the end. I think that horror fans would like this book because of the semi-scary events. The ending was not well written, and it wasn't very good.
