This review is from: Dear Doc (Audio CD)
Listening to these marvelous performances is like visiting a lovable grandfather who enjoys telling stories, except in Doc Cheatham's case, a grandfather who plays trumpet very well, and sings too. Cheatham was 83 when he recorded this set in 1988 and was a walking encyclopedia of musical tradition. Most of the songs are period pieces, and what gems they are! Every time I hear the lyrics of "Rump Steak Serenade," I can't help but break into a smile. It's irrelevant that Cheatham isn't a great singer, because his voice is pleasant enough and his approach is low-key, which makes him an ideal communicator for this music.

Kenny Drew is the perfect accompanist for Cheatham, and the sound is terrific (far better than the dimly recorded "87 Years of Doc Cheatham").

There are so many highlights that it seems churlish to award anything less than five stars here.
