5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, just wow., July 1, 2009
This review is from: Dear Folks (Paperback)
I've read a lot. And I've gotten to the point where I'm extremely picky about what I read. "Dear Folks" was the first book in a long, long time that I've read through in a matter of hours. I was enthralled by the detail and the vivid honesty of a boy who was writing and truly LIVING these letters. Quite effortlessly, he illuminated both the epic agony and the mundane, day-to-day struggle of a young soldier. To someone like me(a college-aged person), it's easy to think of war as a constant movie, fast-paced and homerically tragic all the time- but George reminded me that in between the minutes, hours, days, or weeks of death, Life, normalish life, always peeks through.
So read it. So much better than most of that crap out there:)

4.0 out of 5 stars An honest feel for WW2 doughboys, September 5, 2008
This review is from: Dear Folks (Paperback)
This little book is a real sleeper. There are an unlimited number of books on WW2 but none give such a vivid feel for what a hell it must have been to tour France and Germany, fox hole to foxhole for 67 days without a break!
