5.0 out of 5 stars LOve it
I made a twin size quilt using some of these blocks. There is a whole world wide group of people making this quilt. The original is on display at the Bennington Museum in Vermont every Fall. I've seen it and it's beautiful in person. I LOVE this book. It does NOT come with instructions. You can get tons of help by going to the website of www.dearjane.com

2.0 out of 5 stars Like a cookbook without the recipes....
Dear Jane is a complation of the two hundred and twenty five blocks from Jane A Stickle quilt. If you are a pro quilter you will probably be able look at these drawings and figure out what goes where. For the rest of us, who require directions, you will probably wish Papadakis was a bit more thorough.

Its fine to identify the blocks. I could probably do that...

Dear Jane is a complation of the two hundred and twenty five blocks from Jane A Stickle quilt. Its fine to identify the blocks. I could probably do that given the time. But a drawing and the block name does not constitute a 'pattern.' It might be more accurate to say this book has pictures of each block with a diagram but no instructions.

Overall, I expected more. The Jane Stickle quilt is a masterpiece but this book was useless unless you just want to identify the blocks she made.

This book has patterns for each of the 225 blocks in the Dear Jane Quilt. What the book does not have are instructions for making each block. While this quilt is designed for an experienced quilter, I expected some instructions. I was able to find instructions and hints for making each block on the CD that I purchased separately for making this quilt. This book of patterns was $26. The CD with instructions was $40. There also is very little information regarding the amount of fabric required. There are also no instructions on how wide to make the sashings and borders to end up with the exact size needed for the triangle borders to fix properly. This will be the 26th quilt I have made using various sewing techniques. It will be a challenge to complete the quilt as perfectly as I want. Hopefully the combination of the book and CD will help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most influential book in my quilt library!, September 23, 2009
This review is from: Dear Jane (Paperback)
Since my introduction to "Dear Jane" twelve years ago, this quilt project has inspired me to grow as a quilter in ways I can not imagine having done with any other quilt book or project. More than 90,000 copies have been sold, establishing "Dear Jane" as one of the most important quilt books of our time. The challenge of this quilt project, of recreating Jane Stickle's amazing quilt, the opportunity of becoming part of the international community of Dear Jane Quilters, makes this project much more than just another quilt. Learning the many techniques required to make the 225 Dear Jane blocks has made me a more confident and experienced quilter, and has influenced every quilt project I've encountered since. This book is a gift of love from author and quilter, Brenda Papadakis. Thanks Brenda!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, January 7, 2009

I bought this book thinking it would tell me how to make a reproduction quilt based on the Civil War-era quilt on the cover. It does not. It has a color photo of each block (which is nice), and then a line drawing the author drafted of the block. Many are inaccurate or have mistakes. There are no instructions for making the quilt. The yardage given for the background is wrong, according to the author's website. I had to look up on one of the author's web contributions to find out that the quilt has sashing, and how big to make it. Worst of all, to my mind, the bulk of the book is made up of cutesy diary entries that the author writes to the orginal quilter--long on feelings and short on substance. Finally, the names given to the quilt blocks are modern inventions, given by students in the author's quilting classes. NOT what I was looking for.

A beautiful book with lots of blocks and inspirations. Use some of the blocks or all of them in lovely quilts. Highly recommended for all quilters.

I really like the book but I would like it better if it had the instructions included for making each block. I also noticed that some of the blocks have been drafted incorrectly...too bad this wasn't noticed prior to publication.
On the whole though, the book is still worthwhile purchasing as the details included about Jane Stickle and the pictures of the quilt/blocks are inspiring. What a work of art this quilt is...I wonder how she did it without all the gadgets we have at our fingertips nowadays. A quilt that comes from such a fascinating time like the Civil War is a true treasure! Shipping was very prompt and the book arrived much sooner than estimated.

It seems like it took quite a while to get here, but arrived in great shape & I love the book! This is not a beginners book, but I knew that when I ordered it. You get a pic of the original block, & a sketch drawing of the block , in block form, & you are on your own. Have made a few blocks so far, & am enjoying playing with them..
