From Publishers Weekly

No matter what, Boyd Soloman needs to fly. But before he finally takes the leap from his eighth-floor window, he writes a letter to his ex-girlfriend Julia trying to explain why. This missive takes readers into what's hiding in the recesses of Boyd's on-the-edge, lonely state of mind: his childhood desire to fly, his similarly afflicted father, a corpse on a road trip to Tucson and a strange Rumpelstiltskin-like figure who stalks Boyd--and hastens him toward his destiny. Biggs illustrates his madman's mysterious confession in subtle, muted pen-and-ink drawings tinged with despair and sweet humor. His characters' faces have a grotesque, weighted-down but nevertheless sympathetic quality. Readers who look carefully will note clever details--like Boyd's own reflection in the teaspoon as he dumps instant coffee into his mug--jumping out to brighten the otherwise murky mood. The story's great accomplishment is dragging the reader gently to the edge of sanity within Boyd's ambiguous world, without offering resolution. Conversely, this method of storytelling will frustrate--even infuriate--those who need transparent endings or irrefutable moral judgments. Once one is in the gray area of Boyd's consciousness, danger is also a call to possibility. Is Julia's letter a declaration of triumph or a suicide note? Is Boyd's fate comedy or tragedy? It depends entirely on one's perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL:, August 14, 2007

This review is from: Dear Julia,
'Dear Julia' was ahead of it's time. While many authors are attempting intimate/storybook-type mature works and formats that are analogous to this book (today), Brian Biggs did it a good decade before. Quite simply, Brian produced a sequential story that held itself to no real format, other than the vision in the author's head.

This book was hand inked and painted on very large boards in considered detail - then reduced to the size in the book. And before anyone thinks that Brian painted the subtle tones in colour then converted them to greys, think again. This book was purposefully painted in the lovely nuanced 'greys' you see in the previews.

A real work of art.

The story is engaging and haunting. The main characters (and particularly the main two) are very believable and complex. Brian doesn't tell us 'all' that is going on, but provides enough to make this extremely engaging. I can just imagine how anxious the reader must have been when this book was serialised over the course of years or months. Not knowing what was going to come next until the next issue would have been torture!

I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting to see what the comics medium is capable of from a different angle. It's still in my top 10 Graphic Novles/Illustrated Stories of all time after this many years. This is a book you don't lend to friends for fear of losing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed Beginning Comic Book Reader, July 17, 2011

This review is from: Dear Julia, (Paperback)
I'm a special education teacher, always on the look-out for anything that will interest my students in reading and writing. I haven't had the opportunity to introduce this book to my students yet, but, boy, I sure enjoyed it!

The story might be a decade old; however, the ideas are timeless. I found the layout very intriguing, love the way the letter was presented throughout the story, with the interjections of character interaction.

I was very impressed with Biggs's work, have already introduced it to a couple of adults, and very much look forward to introducing it to my upper-elementary students.
