Skeptical at first, Paul Tanner joins the school journalist, Chris Bishop, on a mission to expose the headmaster as one of America's most wanted criminals.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Conford, the author of such upbeat novels as Dear Lovey Hart, I Am Desperate and You Never Can Tell , succeeds once again. When Paul first comes to Burnside Academy, he thinks he has stepped into a nightmare. Broken windows, frigid bathrooms and inedible meals are just the beginning. But school somehow seems bearable when Orson, Chris and Wendell befriend Paul; when the boys begin speculating about their headmaster's sordid past, Burnside actually becomes intriguing. Conford peoples her tale with a cast of zany characters who, with their irresistible quirks and quips, manage to make an unbelievable plot seem real. Readers will gradually warm to Paul's integration into this crazy group of friends; by the time the boys are plotting to expose the headmaster, the audience will be completely hooked. A rollicking, surprising finish caps off this riotous tale. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-- In a hurry to catch a plane for Switzerland, Paul Tanner's parents dump him at a boarding school they have never personally inspected. Had they stayed, they would have observed some highly unusual events. Paul's roommate keeps trying to fly from the roof and paints a glow-in-the-dark woman on the ceiling. When Chris, the school paper's editor, isn't printing total lies, he's breaking into the office files to do research. The coach's idea of sport is playing checkers on the hockey field during a blizzard. The food is of indefinite origin, but definitely gross. When Chris decides the headmaster is a deranged murderer in hiding, Paul isn't convinced, but he sees little to lose in helping his friend. At worst, he might be expelled from a school he hates. After several narrow escapes, the evidence piles up against Pickles, and Chris decides to expose him during the Founder's Day play. Conford is at her best in describing the casual, humorous absurdities that exist in many school situations. Her The Alfred G. Graebner Memorial High School Handbook of Rules and Regulations (Little, 1976) has become an anthem for students treading through the paradoxes created by a large, dimwitted educational bureaucracy. It is a tribute to this writer's exceptional skill that the ridiculous boarding school happenings of her newest novel seem quite plausible. Even rather large plot twists are made reasonably digestible with the help of likable characters; perfect pacing; and smooth, comical dialogue. Not deeply thematic, this one's for fun!-- Cindy Darling Codell, Clark Middle School, Winchester, KY

5.0 out of 5 stars A little break from reality, July 5, 2004

This review is from: Dear Mom, Get Me Out of Here! (Hardcover)
I read this book when I was younger. I found it to be quiet enjoyable. The characters were very curious in their patterns of thinking. The book, I think, is perfect for the age level the rating recomends. When I read this book I needed to escape. This book helped me do exactly that. Although I don't quiet remember everything in the book, for I read it so long ago, I do remeber that it was like the Harry Potter books. They engulf you in the plot. Closing your mind to anything and everything around you. I recomend this book to anyone who just needs a little break from the ordinary. "Dear Mom, get me out of here!", got me into trouble with my parents for not hearing when they called me. Just an enjoyable read for the reader. If you are having second thoughts of buying this book, you will have no regrets. I read plenty and love a good story as much as the next person. Therefore, I rate this book a five out of five. For it is so rare to find a good book.
