3.0 out of 5 stars A true story..., May 28, 2003
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Hardcover)
The book contains the authentic story of Chris and Helen, two teenagers experiencing the love between them. When Helen realizes that she is pregnant, she has a difficult decision to take: her mother wants her to terminate the pregnancy, Helen would like to go to music college and Chris wants her to give birth to the "little Nobody" like Helen uses to call him in her letters. These "Dear Nobody" letters and Chris'honest and emotional descriptions of the happenings, his ambivalent feelings and the changing relationship to Helen take turns. This fact let the reader have a closer look on both trains of thought, male and female: Chris'point of view and Helen's inner conflict; that's why I prefer "Dear Nobody". I never read such a book before and it is the first one in which a male main character illustrates so frankly how he feels and who is so overwhelmed by the occurences Berlie Doherty's novel deals with.
[...]Throughout the book Helen writes letters to her unborn baby about her most personal thought. This book to me gives a great perspective of a teenage girl, going through very confusing issues and how she deals with the changes her body is going through. The author does a termendous job of stating realistic facts. The novel is always leaving you wondering what is going to happen next.Helen and Chris narrate the consequences of one night's unprotected passion that changes the course of their lives forever. With teen parenthood superimposing itself upon college plans, both give voice to disbelief, confusion, and fear. [...]. I think the book is very interesting, but it is not written for 16 years old children. The view, how the story is written by Berlie Doherty is very good to describe the feelings of Helen and Chris, but I like it more, when the story is told from the 3rd person !

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book about problems of today's youth!!, May 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Hardcover)
Book Review: Berlie Doherty „Dear Nobody"

The book deals with the (sometimes tragic) story of two 18-year old teenagers: Helen, who gets pregnant, and her boyfriend Chris, also the father of her unborn child. The unwanted pregnancy brings about all the troubles that both now have to face, for unfortunately they want to study at two different universities. So now their plans for the future seem to be made in vain. Additionally both teenagers have problems with their parents: [...]The book is written in a style typically for today's youth, and if you're a teenager yourself, you can easily identify with the problems described in the book, either because some of the situations mirror your own life and it may help you to get on with it, or just because you want good entertainment. I would recommend it especially to young people, because the book really deals with the current problems of today's youth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dear Nobody, March 11, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
"Dear Nobody," Helen's letters start. You may ask, "who is Nobody?" or "Why is this Helen girl writing to someone who doesn't exist?" The answer is that Nobody is 18 year old Helen Garton's baby, growing inside her. Nobody is Chris' baby too, and so when Helen breaks their relationship saying, "I just need some time to figure everything out" he is furious. This just adds to Chris' list of problems of passing his exams, finding and talking to his ex-mother, and making his desions about college. Helen also has many probems to deal with, like college, exams, abortion, and regaining her mother's friendship and love. Find out how Helen & Chris figure their complicated lives out by reading "Dear Nobody", a **** out of ***** star book.

This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
I was really overwhelmed by "Dear Nobody".It tells the reader about every day-problems of young adults, for example arguments with parents or friends and love/loneliness.The main characters Helen and Chris are both seniors and deeply in love when Chris gets Helen pregnant unwanted.Chris's narrative and Helen's letters to her unborn baby whom she calls "Nobody" show up how they cope with their new circumstances. Some passages can almost move you to tears because it is written in a realistic way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple language, yet complicated ideas., July 29, 2000
By
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from the local British Council library. This book is recommended to the local upper secondary school students. (Grade 9 and 10) The book is in very simple easy-flowing language. However, the idea is complicated. The author has a magic way to make the story interesting. The author is also able to put on readers' thinking caps. "What would I do, if I were in such a situation?" was the quesiton that I often asked myself as I read on. The story starts with a conflict and ends in an open-ended way: it gives readers spaces to think. The book is a good guide to teenagers who are in love. It alert them how much trouble pre-marrital sex can bring. It also serves as a good guide to show teenagers who are pregnant at such early ages what to do. It is also a good guide book for parents who are living with teenagers. The book helps parents understand what the teenagers of the new century are thinking so that they can get closer to their sons or daughters. Anyway, this is a book that is very easy to read. It is just about 200 pages, so it won't take a lot of time. Enjoy your reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A bitter sweet look into the world of a pregnant teenager, April 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
This book was stunningly beautiful. The plot is lovely and the characters are real. This book creats no pretty illusions. It reveals the frightening reality of being young and pregnant. Helen and Chris are young, foolish and in love. They are in no way ready for the results of unprotected sex. When Helen discovers she is pregnant, she is terrified. But soon, she is ready to deal with her pregnancy, and Chris is not. Chris stands by her, but she ends the relationship, feeling its for his own good. But Chris feels he has a right to play a part in his babys life. This story is magnificently told, and truthful. Unlike other stories of pregnant teenagers, this book precents the an honest veiw of Helen and Chris's situation. I would recommened this book to anyone, its so wonderful that everyone deserves to read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very realistic story, October 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
I thought that the novel "Dear Nobody" was a very outstanding book of a pregnant teenager who was very confused. The two main characters of this book are Chris and Helen. Helen and Chris are both seniors, during the school year Helen becomes pregnant with Chris's baby and is left to make a decision on what to do with the unborn baby. She is pressured greatley by her non-understanding mother to have a abortion. Throughout the book Helen writes letters to her unborn baby about her most personal thought. This book to me gives a great perspective of a teenage girl, going through very confusing issues and how she deals with the changes her body is going through. The author does a termendous job of stating realistic facts. The novel is always leaving you wondering what is going to happen next. I never knew if Chris and Helen would stay together or not. I gave "Dear Nobody" four stars because it was well written and a great book to read, but it was drug out in some places.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is a very impressive book!, September 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Dear Nobody (Paperback)
The book is easy to read but I was thrilled by the story. You can feel with the different persons and you can imagine their feelings. During the whole book the tension is always there. I think the subject (pregnancy and abortion) is very important today and this book tells open about the difficulties when a teenager becomes a baby. You can see how difficult it is to stand her own feelings at the tender age of sixteen. The book shows that life could be very hard and painful for example when you have to educate the baby on your own opinion or that you have difficulties to get a job or to finish the school. The boys have also to be concerned on this subject. Girls and Boys have to think what they do. I think the writer will this bring up to the people. Helen (the main person) felt finally lucky about Amy her little daughter. Mirjam Wenzinger
