Editorial Reviews

One of the understated heroes of jazz, Stanley Turrentine achieved some degree of success during the 1970s with a series of pop crossover albums for the CTI label, but his earlier jazz output is well worth seeking. He signed with Blue Note in 1960, largely on the back of his work with Jimmy Smith, and soon began work on his own recordings with his future wife Shirley Scott. Of the more than twenty albums he was to record for the label, Dearly Beloved is rightfully regarded as one of the best, with the choice of compositions being matched by the expert musicianship displayed by Stanley (tenor saxophone), Shirley (organ) and Roy Brooks (drums).

Great straightahead jazz. This album is especially interesting because there is no bassist, Shirley Scott providing the bass lines. Baia is a bright opener with fine drum work from Roy Brooks and a great Turrentine solo. Wee hour theme is a wonderful slow blues. Nobody can touch Turrentine on that. Troubles of the world is a slow, majestic spiritual. This was the first Turrentine-Scott album recorded in 1961.

Anyone who is a Stanley Turrentine fan will cherish this one. I let one of my musician friends borrow this LP(back in the sixties)and it never came back and have been searching ever since. Stanley has a way of playing that causes you to feel the notes he play as well as hear them and it comes from the heart. I bought this album in my early twenties (now 65) and have been a Stanley Turrentine fan ever since.
