Book Description

With all-new reporting, a completely revised and updated second edition of the bestseller that takes down the Great Satan of college sports: the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

Every college sport picks its champion by a postseason tournament, except for one: Divsiion I-A football. Instead of a tournament, fans are subjected to the Bowl Championship Series, an arcane mix of polling and mathematical rankings that results in just two teams playing for the championship. It is, without a doubt, the most hated institution in all of sports. A recent Sports Illustrated poll found that more than 90% of sports fans oppose the BCS, yet this system has remained in place for more than a decade.

Building upon top-notch investigative reporting, Wetzel, Peter, and Passan at last reveal the truth about this monstrous entity and offer a simple solution for fixing it. Death to the BCS: Totally Revised and Updated is brought up to date to cover the 2010-2011 season, listing which teams were screwed by the BCS (such as TCU), how much money college football left on the table by not having a playoff (based on 2011 tax filings), and how the calls for the abolition of the BCS grew even louder this past year. The book also includes findings from interviews with power players, as well as research into federal tax records, congressional testimony, and private contracts. The first book to lay out the unseemly inner workings of the BCS in full detail, Death to the BCS is a rousing manifesto for bringing fairness back to one of our most beloved sports.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The most thoroughly researched, reasoned and readable argument to date for college football reform."
(-Time)

"The plan put forward by Wetzel, Peter and Passan is certainly the strongest BCS-alternative to date. It is imperative that other sports journalists, college administrators and football fans read Death to the BCS."
(-Brian Frederick, The Huffington Post)

"Alternately brilliant and scary. You will put the book down sweaty, angry and wishing you could do something to change the system."
(-Nando DiFino, The Wall Street Journal)

"The book accurately and diligently points out what people have known for years: The BCS is fundamentally flawed, at times a joke, and very controversial."
(-Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times)

5.0 out of 5 stars The book for football fans October 18, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I had been planning to pick up Death to the BCS for a long time, but held out when I saw an expanded edition was coming. The wait was well worth it.

Death to the BCS is required reading for all college football fans. The dark and ugly underbelly of college football, that we all talk about, is presented within with staggering in-your-face facts. Hypocrisy is rampant everywhere and the bannermen of the campaign, named as the Cartel, are lambasted with considerable force. Junker's reign at the Fiesta Bowl is especially enlightening, and in the end disheartening, as it more than likely the norm rather than the exception.

The solution is also spelled out in simplistic detail. A 16 team playoff with all 11 conference champions invited and 5 at larges. The first 3 rounds held at the higher seed's home field and the final game played at a neutral site, all while keeping the current bowls for the other teams. As a football fan, I found myself excited about the possibilities Death to the BCS spelled out with a playoff.

One of the more striking portions of the book came at the end in the form of the following quote. "The BCS is un-American
It steps on the upstart. It discriminates. It dictates who plays, and if any opposition arises, the in charge dismiss it. College football is not the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is the land of Beef 'O' Brady's and the home of BBVA Compass." After reading this book I could not agree more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must read November 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Don't confuse this updated book version with last year's book of same title. The authors continue to uncover the evolving scandal that is being perpetrated by the NCAA (Yes I said it), and the current BCS bowl 'fat cats', who are robbing sports fans of what could be a spectacular season ending playoff. "March Madness" is great but nothing compared to what could become "December Delirium". Just yesterday a U.S. Congressman (Bobby Rush, Chicago) compared the BCS bowl scandal to Al Capone and the Mafia. Oh, and by the way President Obama, this issue is right in your wheelhouse: you need to dethrone undeserving 'fat cats', and to create jobs. You have spoken out favorably to the author's point of view on this issue. A BCS playoff could revive a positive American competitive spirit, and remain a legacy of your administration. President Obama, read this book, and get on board.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEATH TO THE BCS IS INEVITABLE May 7, 2012
Format:Hardcover
My only complaint is the authors' loathing for the Sun Belt Conference. Their scathing comments about this conference added absolutely nothing to this book!

I was appalled at the greed and corruption exposed by this book, within the BCS in general and within the Fiesta Bowl in particular. Imagine Fiesta Bowl employees making contributions to former Fiesta Bowl CEO John Junker's favorite politicians and then being reimbursed with "bonuses", paid for by the Fiesta Bowl. Imagine John Junkers turning his $700,00, plus AMEX card bill over to the Fiesta Bowl for 100% reimbursement and then being trusted to reimburse the Fiesta Bowl for personal expenses!

As I write this review, the BCS is considering a modest playoff system, involving a minimum of teams. The authors make a convincing case for a 16-team playoff and we should not settle for anything less.

Even those readers with only a casual interest in college football should read this book. It's important to understand how schools have been denied a fair share of revenue and how players have been denied opportunities to play for a national championship.

The book is best summarized by the comment of Utah Senator Orrin Hatch: "I believe there is value to ensuring fairness whenever we can. And while life may not be fair, the moment we stop caring that it isn't, we chip away at the American Dream".

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be called Death To The Pre-2004 BCS December 16, 2014
Format:Hardcover
Book should be called Death To The Pre 2004 BCS or Death To All Polls.

I've read the book and understand all the arguments and so on. However, this book is really about pre 2004. Reasoning is because if everybody looks at the BCS, AP, USA Today, and Harris Poll after all the final rankings after 2004, THEY ARE ALL THE SAME!

I think people were just looking for a scapegoat and the BCS was an easy target given they didn't 100% know the system and how it works, which is understandable. But most people in general just wanted a playoff system and used the BCS as unfair criticism in my opinion all the other polls had the exact same top 2 teams in the National Championship Game.

It's about time that the truth came to light. Well written. Well documented. How about a wonderful 16 team/8 game play off system in college football? We LOVE our college BB Spring Madness brackets. We can do the same for NCAAFB! Would be SO much fun. :)
