Sophomore title one of the best in the PI series,
By Ed Lynskey, "author of ASK THE DICE and THE Z... (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews

I really grooved on DEATH BED. PI Marshall Tanner shines through as a character and the voice is pitch-perfect. This early in the series, Marshall focuses on the investigation of an unusual request from a dying man. Original premise, sharp dialogue, heady pace all combine to make this one of the best in the series. Mr. Greenleaf is often compared to the giant Ross Macdonald and for good reason.

This review is from: Death Bed (Mass Market Paperback)
Stephen Greenleaf is a very talented writer in the same vein as Ross Macdonald with a few differences to take into account that Greenleaf started writing in 1979 and continued until about 2000.
Greenleaf is a detective novelist of note in that he feels to me to be in the spirit of the great detective novelists of the past (Chandler, Hammmett, Ross Macdonald). His work is generally very good although I would wish he didn't have his characters swear so often as I thought it lowered the tone of the book a little. Greenleaf doesn't seem to be very widely read which is unfortunate as he tells a good mystery story. This book deals with a dying millionaire who wishes to find his long lost son. He asks John Marshall Tanner to find the son and bring him home. As with any fan of Ross Macdonald and Stephen Greenleaf, we know that the detective will uncover family secrets that will shatter the family but we continue to read as the writing is so good. |
