Death Before Swine (Ben Hart Mysteries #1)

This book embodies what I want from a cozy mystery. :) The story is gripping, there is humour, action, and a convincing sleuth.

There were several times I wished I were his editor, because I would certainly have pushed him on some of the characterizations among other issues. The book dimmed and brightened. The language use was flawless, though.

I get the impression this is an early novel. Given how good it was, I look forward to his future work with anticipatory pleasure.

V.K. Scott's Death Before Swine is fast-paced, entertaining, and full of twists. Ben Hart makes for an engaging narrator, and you can't help but root for the guy as he transitions from an ambling, disaffected high-school chemistry teacher to an amateur, albeit dedicated, detective. The dialogue is well-executed, believable, and at times, downright hilarious. Once I started reading this mystery, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I highly recommend this book! I am looking forward to more Ben Hart Mysteries from this author.

I won a free copy of this, but it's definitely worth far more than free! I loved this book and especially the main character. Ben Hart is just what I like in an amateur detective and in a narrator. He's an all-around nice guy, well-meaning, and he stumbles into his "job" before he even realizes what's happening. He's a regular guy with regular guy problems...who just happens to be wrapped up in a murder investigation. Combine him with good secondary characters and a well-crafted mystery, and I'm sold! Recommending this one to all my mystery-reading friends, and I can't wait to read the next one.

Some books tend to stay with you long after you finish reading them. Death Before Swine is one of those. Ben Hart, a high school chemistry teacher, finds himself involved in a murder mystery that causes him to question the very tenants of his profession... the search for truth. V.K. Scott is my new favorite author! I can't wait for book #2.
