Book Description

December 24, 1996 0415116295 978-0415116299 1
Death had an important and pervasive presence in the middle ages. It was a theme in medieval public life, finding expression both in literature and art. The beliefs and procedures accompanying death were both complex and fascinating.
Christopher Daniell's appproach to this subject is unusual 1n bringing together knowledge accumulated from historical, archaeological and literary sources. The book includes the very latest research, both of the author and of others working in this area. The result is a comprehensive and vivid picture of the entire phenomenon of medieval death and burial.

Editorial Reviews

Review

An impressive book. It will be a significant contribution to medieval and early modern studies. The bringing together of several scholarly disciplines, especially the archaeological, generates much rich detail. This is an exciting piece of work.
–Richard Schoeck, University of Kansas

I have been doing medieval research recently and this is the only book I found that tackles the subject of death (and burial) in both an analytical and personable way. The author never seems to forget the statistics he is writing about were once real people and he elucidates the subject matter very finely, broaching research for facets of the archeological work that otherwise a layman such as myself wouldn't have thought about before. He also is very clear when different theories are his or others' speculation and often offers more than one way of speculating the conclusions. Overall, a very informative and interesting treatise.
