Book Description

Josiah is back on the trail of a murderer. Arthur Aaron Greene III is one of Kentucky’s most prominent horse breeders but he is found hanging from the rafters in a horse barn with stones in his pockets and a bucket of water under his feet. The only witness is a nine year old boy who can’t seem to remember exactly what happened.

Relentless in her pursuit of the killer, Josiah stumbles into decades of lies and deception that include her dear friend, Lady Elsmere. Josiah discovers that she must go back to 1962 if she is to find out the truth at all, while making the rounds of quirky characters that can only be found in the lush Bluegrass horse country. Fighting an unknown enemy in the glamorous world of Thoroughbreds, oak-cured bourbon, and antebellum mansions, Josiah struggles to uncover the truth in a land that keeps its secrets well.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Ms. Keam has written a fun, exciting, and humorous book.  She throws in locally known areas like the Lexington Farmers' Market and Al's Bar.  Ms. Keam's writing is more like lyrical prose, leaving the readers wanting more of Josiah's life and clamoring for the next book.

Bobbi Dawn Rightmyer for Kentucky Monthly Magazine

From the Author

This book was the hardest of the series to write.  It is based on a true story of how the 1962 UK football team was treated by their new coach, Bradshaw.  In addition there were two men who were sexual predators acting in the background trying to lure many Bluegrass athletes to their home, including the UK football team.

The 1962 UK football team was tested in 2008 about their treatment. Fifty percent responded that after forty-some years, they had not forgiven Coach Bradshaw.  Ninety-seven percent said they would never let their sons play for a coach like Bradshaw.

To interweave the stories while keeping the dialogue true to the area was a challange plus adding Shaneika's horse problems.  It is one of the area's more fascinating stories and is seldom talked about.  It really was swept under the carpet.  For sports fans - read Shannon Ragland's The Thin Thirty.

As a mystery book, Death By Bridle
contains a great deal of history which allows the reader to follow the threads of culture that has been handed down to Kentuckians, which makes us unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down September 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Below is the review I wrote for the first book, but it's really about the whole series. Before I paste it, just some thoughts about this specific book ("Death by Bourbon"). This was my favorite book, possibly even more than the first book. Good storyline and detective skills, as well as completely unexpected behavior from the supporting cast (who are great). However, I don't know that this will be interesting to anyone who reads this WITHOUT READING THE OTHER BOOKS (just don't bother). I am really waiting for the next book (and even web stalked Ms. Keams' to find out more)!

Here's the review from the first book/series:

I really couldn't put it down at all, and then had to go and BUY a router, while I was in India, so I could connect my tablet and download the rest of the series. That's how much I liked it.

What I liked:
1) Main character - completely untraditional but someone who seems like an actual REAL PERSON (how about that for a change). No she's not thin, young or gorgeous; she's normal, kind of bitter (which you will find out about more in future books) and smart.

2) I'm not a big mystery person because I get scared easily, but the book wasn't scary, although the last section did have me hold my breath more than a few times.

3) The supporting cast - great build up. But as I write this, I wonder whether I liked it more because I read the whole series and saw how the other characters progressed, completely unexpected from the way that I would have imagined.

Anyhow, I would recommend the entire series -- I'm not sure this book stands alone. And I can't wait for the rest of the books to come out!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth as fine Kentucky Bourbon! October 30, 2012
Format:Paperback
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this Josiah Reynolds mystery! Like the author's previous books, Death by Bourbon hooked me immediately and I could not stop until I read the last word. (Be forewarned, new reader!) I found it an interesting and new experience as a reader to know the details of the plot and "whodunit," and still being kept on the edge of my chair - and followed by an ending that caught me by such surprise! In my opinion, this book goes down easy and smooth as fine Kentucky bourbon!

From beginning to end, this book keeps you guessing. The main character is smart, funny but very human. This series is a great read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lost interest January 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Starts off with bridle on a horse in a stall at 2:30 a.m., and a young kid sleeping in the stall with a racehorse stallion that belongs to his mom, a first time horse owner. Not likely. Josiah herself goes from " not knowing if everything works down there" while recovering from her accident to a one night stand with her gay best friend because her love (unconsummated last book stat unless i missed a love scene along the way) is sent away by her daughter .... I initially liked these for the unique Kentucky settings, but becoming implausible and disjointed....won't continue them

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE USUAL March 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SERIES I'VE EVER READ. NOT ONLY ARE THE SITUATIONS UNUSUAL, BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE QUIRKEY AND EVERY ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS ARE NOT LILY WHITE AND SICKY SWEET. I STARTED WITH THE SECOND BOOK THINKING IT WAS A STAND ALONE NOVEL. WHEN I GOT TO THE END AND REALIZED THERE WAS A FIRST BOOK, I QUICKLY STARTED HUNTING IT DOWN. THEN THE OTHERS FOLLOWED. IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN EACH OF THE SERIES COULD HAVE BEEN A STAND ALONE. IT WAS THAT GOOD. BUT THIS ONE WAS MY FAVORITE. I ACTUALLY STARTED TO READ THE SERIES AGAIN. IT WAS THAT GOOD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great October 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The fourth in the series for this author. The story is good and continues the adventure but be warned of the short cut ending. The reader was shorted by the quick ending and open strings.
