5.0 out of 5 stars The First Matt Helm Novel, March 12, 2000
By A Customer
This is the first of the Matt Helm novels. It gives a lot of background on Helm, and shows how he was forced out of retirement after 15 years to return to work for the nameless secret organization for whom he killed Nazis in WWII. Although this is in the espionage genre, the writing owes more to the hardboiled school of Dashiell Hammett. If you saw any of the sixties films with Dean Martin, you have no idea what the books are like. There is no spoofing here, and the prose is lean and crisp. This is the place to start if you want to begin a new series from the sixties, or just read one of the Helm books.

Many people believe that one of Ian Fleming's strengths was as a travel writer. Similarly, Hamilton is strong as an outdoors writer. Warning: Hamilton is as sexist as Fleming, but less racist and fascist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a favorite, still a classic, August 20, 1999
Death of a Citizen is the first of a 27 novel series about Matt Helm...and a threatened #28 The Dominators (hopefully he will finish it.) For a full list of the series (each book has its own report) and other books written by Donald Hamilton (Line of Fire is my fav). Drop by htp://members.aol.com/MacBorden/ "Matt Helm: The Unofficial Homepage"... In DOAC, Matt cain't escape from his past, so he does what he does best..tackle it head on! Mild Mannered photographer hasn't forgotten a bit of his skills that saw him through many missions behind enemy lines in WWII...just a little trouble figureing out who his friends are...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, well written and hard edged spy novel, December 25, 2008
This review is from: Death of a Citizen (Mass Market Paperback)
The first thing that struck me about this book was how skillful the author was. He places you in the middle of a cocktail party at the start of the book and in several short chapters gives you much of Matt Helm's background, or at least the essential details.

There is a great atmosphere of charged violence in this. It reads very convincingly, and has a brutal sensuality to it that pulls the reader along. This strikes me as more realistic than Bond, and certainly recommended for people who want a very readable, tough piece of spy fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Note good reviews below: Hamilton is worthy of the praise, May 29, 2005
Here's the first Matt Helm. He's an assassin, a professional killer. It's a lot better than you'd think if you've placed the Matt Helm books in the "cheap pulp" bin or based your opinion on the Dean Martin movies (awful). The books are VERY good, and this is the best place to start. You'll want to read the others when you've finished this-- the "death of a citizen" is an ironic title, as you'll see.

So you've read the Ian Flemings (James Bonds) and the John D. MacDonalds (Travis McGees) and wonder if there are any more good 60s spy/thriller series characters out there: here's Matt. He's tough and nasty, and the prose is spare and gritty. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars #1 in one of the great secret agent series, September 16, 1998
By A Customer
The 1st of the Matt Helm series, not to be confused with the largely comedic Dean Martin films. This is a serious, sober look at ex-spy when old associates re-enter his life. Matt Helm finds himself roped into helping an ex-partner only to have the mission take a sinister turn. Before the end of the book, the gentle writer-photographer from New Mexico will be transformed back into Eric, the cold brutal executioner from WWII. The transformation has consequences that launch the series and change Matt's life. The series is old, this was written in the late fifities and more recent books downplay/ignore the WWII connection. A good time and a great intro to the best American secret agent fare ever written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Helm is born, December 8, 1997
By A Customer
This is the first Matt Helm book by Donald Hamilton but once you have read it you will be anxious to read the rest. Matt Helm is the most realistic secret agent in the literary field. In "Death of a Citizen", Matt is happily married and trying to live a normal life, however, his past life as a government agent catches up with him. When the bad guys kidnap his daughter to force him to perform a task for them, Matt Helm shows his stuff. A must read book!

This book is the beginning of a great series. Matt Helm is tougher and meaner than James Bond. It is a great quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who wants to read James Bond, after you have read Matt Helm, May 7, 1999
By A Customer
This is a first in a series of must read spy novels. He pulls no punches. He has good common sense. He gives many good lessons on what to watch for when you are in a dangerous business. Does anyone know if he is still around.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Matt Helm series leaves James Bond in the dust., November 11, 1998
By A Customer
This is the first in a series of Matt Helm books, which introduces the toughest, most ruthless, intelligent, and credible of the secret-agent genre. In his post-war, peaceful life, Helm is lured back into a violent, deadly world he had left behind, by Tina, his past partner in undercover actions against the Germans. His subsequent actions to recover his past life show a brand of ruthless, intelligent, and human reactions are the best examples of this genre to date. If you enjoy espionage novels, this book and the following series are a must-read.

Donald Hamilton catches your interest right away by contrasting the current wife aganist Matt Helms mysterious past. His life as a government agent is continued and the great spy thriller is created. Oh, he has to kill his old girlfrind to save his daughter, and his wife divorces him for this act. I have tried to collect all the novles, they are quite exciting to read and collect.
