Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is a book that will inspire the next generation of bartenders. The Death & Co crew has managed to mix equal measures of hospitality and creativity, and the impact of their experiment will be felt far beyond their modest East Sixth Street saloon. This book extends Death & Co’s reach even farther.”
—Dale Degroff, author of The Craft of the Cocktail

“Death & Co changed the way we drink in America. This elegant, intelligent book—with drink recipes from the ‘Dirty Dozen’ of top bartender/mixologists working in America today (all Death & Co veterans), plus sound, concise advice on every aspect of drink making—will make sure that nobody could possibly forget that.”
—David Wondrich, author of Imbibe! and Punch

“Death & Co has become an integral part of New York’s cocktail culture, and will remain a part of it for years to come. David and Alex have influenced the way people drink in New York City (and around the world), and I’m constantly inspired whenever I step into their bar. They craft each drink just as I would approach a dish, piecing together the ingredients, testing it tirelessly, striving for perfection, and also trying to connect each recipe to a story. There is a real art, a real passion behind everything they do, and this book will act as a
timeless reference for anyone interested in cocktails.”
—Daniel Humm, chef/co-owner of Eleven Madison Park and Co-Author of I Love New York

“A fascinating, in-depth look at one of the best bars out there—brimming with
the same attitude and resolve that made Death & Co a true winner in the field. This book is a one-stop shop for anyone interested in cocktails and the bars that serve them, and it’s a brilliant read, to boot.”
—Gaz Regan, author of the Joy of Mixology

“With Death & Co, David, Nick, and Alex have created an instant classic for craft cocktail enthusiasts and professionals alike. I’ve found this book to be essential in my home.”
—April Bloomfield, chef/owner of The Spotted Pig

I've never been inspired to write an amazon review, but WOW. This book is AMAZING. I own a few cocktail books and I've thumbed through countless others, but I've never come across such an incredible tome.

The Death & Co cocktail book is elegant, simple, and clear. The instructions are thorough. The recipes don't all rely on expensive, obscure liquors. And there's a great appendix for making infusions and other in-house delights. Bonus, the photos are beautiful! I couldn't ask for anything more.

I have hundreds of cocktail and spirits books in my collection since I work as a spirits professional and cocktail/bar/distillery consultant. I think this is one of the best cocktail books ever published, if not THE best. The detail, depth and breadth, outlook, and uniqueness make it a winner. Actually, I expect it to take several awards for best cocktail/spirits book in the upcoming year. Bravo! Oh, and to get 500+ of their custom recipes, many of which I have enjoyed at Death & Co. over the years, is great.

Out of all the cocktail and alcohol-related books I own (ten to be exact), this is by far the best one.

Pros:
1. Features sophisticated, modern, sleek cocktails that are perfect for dinner parties by probably top 100 craft-cocktail bartenders in the world. I tried out 20 cocktails in the book so far and loved 18 or 19 of them.
2. A perfect combination of honed and improved simple, classic cocktails with upscale, more complex recipes to add to your repertoire. For what it is, an incredible bang for the buck.
3. Covers the ingredients, techniques, drink history and tools - great for newbies as well as seasoned cocktail crafters alike.
4. Large, beautiful, well-made book with hundreds of fantastic illustrations.

Cons:
1. Some of the ingredients are somewhat obscure (e.g. none of my local NJ liqueur mega-stores had Creme Yvette in stock)

Excellent book of recipes and advice, but I will give you one word of caution. Maybe a few words. A large number of the recipes in here require specialized ingredients. Given the advice in the book, you will probably be able to make substitutions, but at its base, these are recipes for a very well-stocked bar. Besides that, however, the book contains excellent advice on everything from ice to glasses to types of alcohol to opening your own cocktail bar (and every sub-type therein).

Excellent book for:
Bartenders (especially those who do the ordering)
Home cocktail aficionados
People who like cocktails and who insist on opening a cocktail bar (I say insist because if you need the book to open a cocktail bar you shouldn't open a cocktail bar)
People who know a lot about cocktail bars but want a little extra inspiration for their new cocktail bars (go ahead, open a cocktail bar, what do I care?)
People who are going to steal the Death & Co formula to open an identical cocktail bar, perhaps called "Life & Co" or "Death and Waffles" or something like that
People who are going to make me cocktails.

‘Death & Co' written and tasted by authors David Kaplan, Nick Fauchald and Alex Day, illustrated by William Hereford is book that every bartender and cocktail lover dreams of – extensive in its scope, creative in its experimenting and elegant in its presentation.

On more than 300 pages this beautifully designed book delivers collection of cocktail recipes ranging from those simple to prepare up to the real masterpieces until now prepared only by cocktail masters – overall more than 500 of them.

Besides being informative, the authors managed to create book which is pleasure and easy to read and browse through using combination of text and beautiful photos. For each cocktail included are how-to-make instructions and ingredients intertwined with cocktail history or some character connected or in love with it.

Therefore, regardless if are bartender or some home-bar enthusiast who want to learn how to prepare great cocktails or if you are in search for a great gift for someone who loves cocktails, you can't miss with ‘Death & Co' – a book that will be both pleasure to browse through or dive into the ocean of information related to diverse cocktail preparation.

Great design, full of information, this book can be fully recommended.

Incredible tactile feel, with a suede do cover and lush high quality printing, I love this book however I hot the sense, while reading it, that the publisher must have set some sort of minimum page length as, at times, it felt like the writers were inserti filler material to reach the goal. But the book includes a terrific foundation on cocktails, as well as valuable information about flavor pairings and basic recipe fundamentals. If I'm going to make a criticism it would be that the majority of the ingredients and liquors and Liquers that are called for re relatively obscure, at least for someone who doesn't live in New York, for example.
