4.0 out of 5 stars A great debut
I was never interested mysteries - they seemed kind of male domintated, but this novel made me a fan of the genre. I have since picked up a couple of titles by Walter Mosley who is in a class by himself. Both authors use urban settings for their tales and employ a rich cast of characters. 2.0 out of 5 stars Good Characters, Bad Mystery
I always like to give new authors a chance, so I read "When Death Comes Stealing" hoping for a good mystery. What I got were 2 characters that I liked a lot, Tamara and Jamal, but very little actual detection from a supposed private eye. Try Marcia Muller or Sue Grafton if you want good mystery and detection from a female writer. I will probably not read...

4.0 out of 5 stars A great debut, May 23, 2000
This review is from: When Death Comes Stealing (Tamara Hayle Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was never interested mysteries - they seemed kind of male domintated, but this novel made me a fan of the genre. I have since picked up a couple of titles by Walter Mosley who is in a class by himself. Both authors use urban settings for their tales and employ a rich cast of characters. Wesley may not have created an outrageous sidekick like the quick-tempered Mouse, but she has plenty of drama in this novel.

This debut of the Tamara Hayle series made me take note because I hadn't heard much about female private investigators. My interest was immediately piqued. The lead character is likeable and realistic. The dialogue and action are engaging and maintain the pace of the storyline nicely.

What I liked most about Tamara's character are her independence and pragmatism. Even though she really hates her ex-husband DeWayne (she has every right to), she has no choice but to help him figure out who is picking off his sons systematically. She is the mother of his youngest child and knows that it's up to her to protect him. She also had some feelings for one of the murdered boys because he came to visit her son when he was an infant.

I was enthralled throughout the entire book and each time I thought I figured out the killer's identity, another piece of evidence appeared. The ending caught me completely off guard.

I loaned this book to someone and never got it back, so I guess I'm not the only one who enjoyed it.

Tamara Hayle is a single mother and private investigator. She left the police force to pursue this career challenge.

In this novel, Tamara investigates the mysterious deaths of a group of young men. These young men are being murdered, one by one with no apparent justification. The one commonality is that these young men have the same father, who also happens to be the father of Tamara's son. She wants to find out what is going on before Tragedy hits home.

This investigation gives you a look at Tamara the PI, Tamara the mother, and Tamara the woman. It shows her relationships with the men in her life: her brother Johnny, her son, his father (DeWayne), her former co-workers, and they mysterious Basil Dupree. Tamara Hayle is an ace P.I. I never wanted to read mysteries, so this was bought on a whim. Valerie Wilson Wesley has done a great job with this character. I've gotten every Tamara Hayle Mystery since I read this one, although this one is still my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Death Comes Stealing, January 30, 2001
This review is from: When Death Comes Stealing (Tamara Hayle Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Someone is after my sons Tamamra." Every so often you come across a book that you can't put down. You must continue reading to the very last pages. That was the case with this book. When Death Comes Stealing by Valarie Wilson Wesely. This mystery book about murder and the race against time will keep you on the edge of your seat. Will the smart and witty dectective Tamamra Hayle uncover the mysterious murder before it takes her son? You will just have to read and find out. What I enjoyed about this book was the narrative hook. The narrative book was that form the very begining someone was murdered, but the authour never told you until the very end, there was no way for you to know the killer without reading the last pages. I also enjoyed the suspense and mystery. On the other hand, you always have something about a book that you don't like or that annoys you. The didn't I didn't enjoy about When Death Comes Stealing was the language. This book had a lot ofcursing. I think the other could have used different words in stead of cursing. I learned that you should spend more time with your family because in an instant, they can be snatched away from you by a mysterious force. I would recommend this book for anyone who is over the age of fourteen due to the fact of language. If you like mystery books, this also the book for you.

I wasn't a mystery reader until AFTER I ran through the streets of Newark NJ with Tamara Hayle. Tamara is down to earth, smart, witty, and contemporary. Along with the savy characters, Wesley tells a pulsating story of excitement; combined, these attributes make for an excellent read.

I love mysteries, and mysteries without plot are no good.

This book was a great mystery. I'm not usually a fan of mysteries, but this book kept me interested and I was eager for more. I'm reading "Devil's Gonna Get Him" now. It started off kind of slow, but I'm getting into it now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tamara Hayle is the Woman!, December 26, 2002

Thanks to Wesley, mystery has become my favorite fictional genre. Her sassy sleuth, Tamara Hayle embraces those true qualities of the quintessential African American woman; strong and sassy on the outside while all the while able to conceal her internal self-doubts and fears. In the end, it's all done for the betterment of her family, friends, her community at large.

When Tamara takes on the case to find the murderer of her ex-husband's son, she knew that against her better judgement, it was something she had to do. After all, she too shares a son with this man even though he hasn't been much of a father to him. The only thing that I really didn't feel too comfortable with was how Tamara handled the fate of her son. I thought she should have shown more concern in the beginning about his welfare. As the book progresses, however, the motherly instincts kick in better. Tamara also shows us how hard it is for a Sista not to get clouded by her feminine desires when it's the right thing to do.

All in all, this is an engaging book with a strong ending. There are many characters flowing through this mystery. This creates motives and means for many so it concludes in a very unpredictable fashion which is exactly what you want in a good mystery.

Thanks Valerie for the Tamara Hayle series. This is the second one I read and I will definitely be reading them all!
