4.0 out of 5 stars Witty, original novel
I purchased all three novels of Mr. Sanders few years ago. At last I read the first one, "Death in the Dordogne". It was a very nice surprise. Short, both suspensfull and witty, original novel. There are no bags of old tricks in this book. The puzzle is convoluted, the characters and atmosphere sharply drawn. I have no intention of visiting Dordogne in February. The...

3.0 out of 5 stars What is a murder?
Revenge, accident, madness, insiders and outsiders: this is a tale with roots in the French Resistance but somewhat tangled and difficult to read. I'm not sure of the motives of the principal character and how he becomes involved in France or the events of the novel. It lacks the sort of charming querkiness found in some of the novels to which is has been compared...

The leading character, the sleuth, is a total unknown to us. We know that he is an Englishman, an amateur painter and that sums it all up.
Everything else is left to our imagination. Buying unknown authors sometimes pays off. If you want something different than the average mystery, Mr. Sanders is your man.

Revenge, accident, madness, insiders and outsiders: this is a tale with roots in the French Resistance but somewhat tangled and difficult to read. I'm not sure of the motives of the principal character and how he becomes involved in France or the events of the novel. It lacks the sort of charming querkiness found in some of the novels to which is has been compared. Perhaps some find the individuals portrayed as more than the pathetic types they seem to me. It is not really action / adventure, but challenges a reader to solve the crime.
