A superb vintage mystery,

This review is from: Death in the Fog (Paperback)
Reviewing this book, the New York Times said "From the first page to the last, this story is pervaded by the atmosphere of horror and suspense that invariably marks the work of Mignon G. Eberhart." The Times had it right. There's plenty of horror and suspense in "Death in the Fog," and plenty too of the atmosphere of the Depression-era screwball comedy; if Hollywood were casting this in 1933, the principal roles would have gone to Carole Lombard, William Powell, Gene Raymond, Marie Dressler, Helen Broderick, and Eric Blore. Anyone with a yen for that 30s atmosphere and with a fondness for Chicago will find "Death in the Fog" irresistible. Compared to "The House on the Roof" and "Fair Warning," the pacing is better and the heroine more compelling; this may be Eberhart's best work from the 1930s.

This is one of my favorite Eberhart mysteries. It has just about everything: fog and damp, a thirties setting, a likeable heroine with more backbone than many of Eberhart's, a dark, brooding house, and colorful characters (mysterious grand dame, alcoholic guest and his annoyingly aggressive wife, murder victims both nasty and gentle, and a funny-smart detective).
What it doesn't have is a stable title, because it was formerly issued as The Dark Garden ... in my opinion, a more evocative title. Be warned: they are the same book

Mignon G. Eberhart Wrote some wonderful Mysteries. Wish they could be put on Kindle. Favorites are several of her first ones. With Nurse Keate and Lance O'Leary in the first Five. Good clean reading even if they are a bit dated. The older books are the best to read. I have read at least 30 of her books. The older authors did not have to try to thrill anyone with swear words or lots of sex scenes to sell their books. They relied on good writing. Lets see more of them on Kindle. Thanks
