Something we knew about hundreds on thousands of years ago,
By Elliot Knapp (Seattle, Washington United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Death of God (Audio CD)
Way to go Roy! Britain's best songwriter has still got it, and he proves he does with his epic new single. A multipart piece from different perspectives of people involved in the imperialist foreign military actions perpetrated by the USA, The Death Of God features Harper's trademark guitar, creative vocal arrangements, and cutting lyrics. This is some of Roy's most compelling work in the last few years, and I would recommend checking it out. The premise, I would say, is similar to Dylans "With God On Our Side," insofar as the Bush Administration has claimed to have God on its side, as it were, but when the bottom fell out of the ridiculous war in Iraq and there were no WMD to be found, (in Roy's view) God was wrong, and he "fell out the sky." Great stuff, and it's a good thing Roy has his own label because a big one probably wouldn't allow this kind of sharp commentary. (...)

Harper, harper --he's at it again!!!!!!!,

Well , my musical friends ..here is an extremely unusual (even for Roy Harper) song/ballad, modern protest song , circa 2005, , which purports to about 'the Death of GOD!!!!!?????????don't pretend to understand the message too much here, but the musical part sounds really good, excellent acoustis/electric guitar runs here, also some of Roy's studio voice double tracking here reminds one of the "Lifemask" , "Stormcock" period (voice echo , e.t.c.) -it really is nice to hear Roy trying out this sound once more -he was always a genius in this area!!The song itself..13 minutes or so, is a general put -down on war , and also Harper's endlesss put-down , also , on all things 'RELIGIOUS' , the lyrics, Roy , are a littlre twee in places,( i , myself am a confirmed Christian!!), but, nevertheless, a great track!!Buy!!
