Customer Reviews

I love both of M.C. Beaton's series (Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin).

Cheap of all cheap tricks - it was "Death of a Glutton" republished - not even altered to put it in context with the series.
Jack's Mum
MC Beaton has a way of unfolding very different story lines with surprising twists.

I love the Hamish Macbeth series. It is shameful that Hachette Book Group republished an older title, Death of a Glutton, renaming it Death of A Greedy Woman. The review should have made this clear to customers. I'm sure I'm not the only Amazon customer who ordered Death of a Greedy Woman thinking it was an original book in the series. This is both disappointing and makes me feel I have been deceived.

This is a good book, but don't be deceived! This is a re-issue of "Death of a Glutton" from 1993 with a new title. I wish I had known this when I ordered it months ago as a pre-order and had to pay shipping, too! I just received it today, looked at the book, and saw "Previously published as Death of a Glutton" on the bottom of the front cover. It's been a while since I ordered it, but I don't think there was any mention on the Amazon website of this being a re-issuing of an old book. I ordered it because it was advertised as a new Hamish Macbeth mystery, and I have them all. Very disappointing! I'll have to be more careful in the future!

This book was previously published in 1993 as "Death of a Glutton". Its a good story but I wouldn't have bought it if I realized they had just changed the name of a book I had read. Its in the Hamish Macbeth series and I have been reading them in order. I'm disappointed.

Listed as a new book in the series with a new publication date when in fact it is merely a retitled book from 1993. For someone who buys and reads most of the books in the series, a duplicate was not appreciated. It'd be nice if Amazon would sort by copyright date instead of publication date.

I was very dissapointed that this was just a retitled issue of "Death of a Glutton" which I already have.

I have been reading the Hamish Macbeth series in order. All of a sudden, Lugs and Sonsie are gone, Clarry the Cook and Elspeth are gone. The book was just out of context, but the story seemed awfully familiar. Cheap of all cheap tricks - it was "Death of a Glutton" republished - not even altered to put it in context with the series. Very disappointing! Now I am afraid the wonderful cast of characters will be missing in "Death of a Kingfisher". Very disappointing!

If you have read Death of a Glutton don't waste your money on Death of a Greedy Woman - THEY ARE ONE AND THE SAME. I am not the only one to be fooled into thinking I was buying a new book in the Hamish Macbeth series. Sadly, I didn't read the reviews until I had wasted good money on this book. Nowhere in the advertising was it stated that this was a reissue of a previous book under a different title. Like others before me I feel disappointed and deceived. Surely it would not be too much to ask for this to be made clear at point of purchase.

I normally don't write reviews such as this but am going to make an exception this time. This book, `Death of a Greedy Woman," was actually published back in 1993 under the title "Death of a Glutton." Now this is a very fine book and is actually one of my favorites in a series that is one of my favorite. I have nothing against the story, the writing or anything like that. What does bend my nose out of shape though is that the publishers have reissued this older book, `Death of a Glutton," under the new title we see here and have given us NO WARNING! This book was bought as a present and presented to me as my wife knew I was a big Hamish fan. She did this in good faith. Alas, she was taken advantage of. I have absolute no problem with reissuing a book under a new title. This is done all the time. But normally the customer is given warning. There was and is NO WARNING on this book. That folks, is not a good thing.

I am giving this three stars because it is a very fine story. I am taking two stars away because of the lack of respect the publishing company ((I hope the author had nothing to do with this) has for its customers, i.e. those of us who pay for their living.

Now keep in mind...if you have not read `Death of a Glutton," then by all means read this new title...it is a wonderful book and a great read. On the other hand, if you have read it, then beware!
